I once saw a man busking in Brighton in May wearing a Father Christmas costume with a sign reading 'Only 210 [or whatever] Shopping Days Till Christmas'. He wasn't singing Christmas songs though, very odd.

Absolutely, the typical beneficiary of a substantial inheritance is already in late middle age and the 'family home' they inherit could very well be somewhere they've never lived and never will live, it's emotive tosh.

The only ‘no go zones’ in Britain are gated communities, country estates full of, or owned by rich, largely white folk. And don’t get me started on the villages they’ve basically ‘enclosed’ on the north Norfolk coast.

1975 historical drama Winstanley includes an example of a spoon being used in this way.

Gosh, hasn't our idea of what counts as a small garden changed over recent decades? About a quarter of the footprint of a typical new build garden gets taken up by its tiny shed.

I'm also a connoisseur of weird or auction lots. A few years ago I spotted this collection of crowns of thorns on sale in Germany. As far as I remember they were going very cheap but, nevertheless, I wasn't tempted.
A collection of crowns of thorns there's about eight of them in total laid on a table they vary quite substantially in size and one of them isn't really thorns at all it's carved out of wood

Gosh, that's one of those songs I can sing along to without having heard for nearly 50 years. I can't remember the programme at all, just the song and a discussion about reality - or otherwise - of the fountain of youth. From the same fuzziest edges of my memory as Puffa Puffa Rice.

There was a horrible stole made of actual moles in a drawer in the house where I grew up. You could see the joins between the skins I think there were about 15 moles in it. Anybody rational but have thrown this away as it was obviously never going to be worn, it smelt grim, my mother kept it.

Picture of man smiling with tea-mug. Headline reads: "Non-Billionaire who actually lives in the UK and pays its taxes says he has lost confidence in the super-rich", with sub-header: 'One of Britain's taxpayers says he has lost confidence in billionaires, describing them as "on the take"".

The post isn't even internally consistent. If the UK "is taxing itself to death", and if Laffer is right that "taxes can become so punitive they reduce revenues", then why would lowering taxes require you to cut spending?

Really good piece on whether free UK museums should move to charge. Great point on the weird incentives here from Chris Smith - would those who are successful in getting commercial income just open the door to losing state support? www.ft.com/content/f243...
Smith, the former culture secretary, says the push for charging "has come from the Treasury... They thought it would be an easy and attractive way of raising money, given the difficult fiscal picture.
"But of course for the museums that did charge, the Treasury would just claw back a portion of the grant-in-aid that they give them," he adds. "So we would not see a new dawn for the sector, just a fall-off in visitors, reputational strength and soft power."

A cake
I Do you know how long l've spent in the Guardian's image archives to find a picture of a bog
standard cake? Bloody ages! Thousands of images and not one thing that you'd recognise as a
normal cake. This weird ice cream thing is the best I could do. Everything else has a sodding fried
egg or a bunch of parsley obscuring it, or has been arranged to resemble a Picasso painting or a
sculpture reflecting the futility of existence. When did this place becore riddled with hipsters?

If you were living in Europe in the 1580s and 90s, you would likely have heard a few herring prophecies from Norway. Fishes with words about evil, fighting knights symbolizing the Ottoman conflicts of the Habsburg monarchy etc. appeared, and they all predicted something about the state of the world.
