Proud to be a designated spokesperson for the anti-AI humanist movement in this excellent @newyorker.com piece. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
Paragraph from linked New Yorker article reads: This is not A.I. populism, as Sun describes it, so much as anti-A.I. humanism; its champions worry about what would be left if human pursuits became pointless. I was struck by how many A.I. skeptics converged on the same formulation: what is this activity for? When I called Lila Byock, a mother of two and the founder of Schools Beyond Screens, a coalition fighting the influence of big tech in schools, she said, “I think that we just need to ask ourselves, like, what is school for? What is education for? One of the really basic problems with using A.I. in education is that it is designed to make tasks easier and to reduce friction, and friction is how learning happens.”

At a moment when major public school districts like LA and NYC are leading by example to protect students from predatory tech companies, "AI-based" Alpha School is requiring students to chase clout on a dying social media platform. These kids deserve so much better.

Yes, this:
A screenshot of Audrey Watters’ weekly post that reads, “This growing rejection and refusal of technology – inside and outside of schools – is about much much more than the technology itself. It is, in part, about the loss of control; the loss of agency, autonomy, and privacy. It is a response to the oligarchs’ efforts to undermine democracy. It is about these billionaires’ dismal, dystopian vision for the future – a wanton destruction of the planet writ large and local communities writ small; their apparent hatred for home and humanity alike.”

For the night crowd: the wins you’re seeing in NYC and LA this week did not fall from the sky. They are the result of literally thousands of hours of organizing by parents, teachers, advocates in both communities. These wins belong to them - and the millions of kids in both cities who will benefit.

Until the LAUSD school board's Ad Hoc Committee on AI has had time to assess the existing research and weigh the risks against the potential benefits, there can be no justification for continuing to allow the district's students to be used as guinea pigs for untested AI technology. #lausd
