The story of our age: amoral tech company releases a new technology that has few benefits, and lots of downsides. Governments that have been compromised or bought off by tech bros fail to protect the public by simply banning it. The cost of policing this nonsense falls on the rest of society.

Wishing @kehlee.bsky.social an average birthday. Why not something more superlative? Well why should a friend spend their birthday of all days labouring under the weight of other people’s potentially unreasonable expectations? That said, if you manage to clear that bar I’ll be happy for you 😉

Just think of all the talent, time, and treasure that has gone into producing nonsense — NFTs, Bitcoin, “prediction markets”, fast fashion, data brokers, most social media, and a good fraction of AI “solutions” — that could have been used to make the world better instead… What a lost opportunity.

These photos of Mitch Tweel at the Charlottetown heritage awards, failing as usual to understand the assignment, are just too funny. For all of Philip Brown’s flaws as mayor, at least he seems to genuinely enjoy the job. www.facebook.com/share/p/1Dfz...

Oh look, the MP for Niagara West-Glanbrook is complicit in in a multi-day PR stunt which he is naming after himself and calling an “inquiry” despite the lack of any parliamentary motion to that effect. There are certain benefits to no longer living there.

Canada’s leaders — and Mark Carney especially — need to finally let go of the fantasy that any beneficial trade agreement with the US is possible, and reform their entire strategy. Certainty was never on the table. It’s time for Carney to stop dealing in old bromides and actually face up to reality.

In the mismatch between words and actions, Mark Carney is the most cynical politician in my lifetime, and it isn’t even close. If I were to match that cynicism, I would suggest that Canadians are about to find out why he moved heaven and earth to secure a majority government.

I've nothing against e-scooters that are speed-limited similarly to e-bikes and we should absolutely carve out space for both to operate separated from pedestrians and motor vehicles, but what possible use-case could there be for an e-scooter that can attain speeds of almost 50mph?

Since “defunding the pillars of society in order to save money” and “giving all the money to police and wealthy pricks” are core tenets of conservatism, I think as a society we ought to consider “conservative” a dangerous indecent thing to be, and those who identify as such should pay a social cost.
