Flamingos are not pink. They are born with grey feathers, which gradually turn pink in the wild because of a dye called canthaxanthin obtained from their diet of brine shrimp and blue-green algae. This is a baby flamingo. Original post

While it’s been many decades since I worked with Michael Moorcock on the Elric books, the character continues to occupy my thoughts. 2/2 www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/20...
Detail from ELRIC AND THE COLD DRAKE featuring a line of black rock leading back to Elric standing on the snowy horizon with a a white dragon coiling its neck behind him. In the immediate foreground, human skulls lay partially buried in the snow that borders the rock.
Figure detail from ELRIC AND THE COLD DRAKE featuring Elric in a wide stance with Stormbringer hanging behind him. His hands grip the scabbard as he stares off to the right with his white hair blowing in the same direction. A white dragon grips a rock with one claw as it coils its neck back in an “S” as if coiled to strike. Its maw spreads in a hiss as if at some threat off-panel.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

SMILER (1978) Acrylic on Masonite - 24" x 16" Inspired by an evening walk through downtown Los Angeles. I was with a large group of authors and artists from the World Fantasy Convention, chatting away as we strolled back to the hotel, when two large rats scuttled by. 1/3 #art #booksky
A skeletal intruder brandishes a long knife with curving blade as it props open a door to peer inside. Its hand appears desiccated—decomposing flesh not bone—as it extends slender fingers against the well-worn wood to widen the gap. A bright red handkerchief is tucked into the neckline of its brown overcoat, concealing chest and throat. A wide brimmed hat completes its disguise. Perhaps from behind it could pass as human, but leering through the door its murderous intent is clear. Blue light gleams from a dark sphere set in one bony socket, and it's jaw hangs open in a grim toothy smile. The view out reveals tall buildings beyond—somewhere urban—and the cool glow of streetlights reduced to hazy saucers runs in a diagonal along a dark street unseen.

Black and white preliminary concept for THE RENEGADES OF PERN featuring a man walking with a bag slung over his shoulder. A caravan follows closely behind. Drifting across the sky, a trio of dragons move left to right. There are no tall trees rising from the plains. Instead a few broken trunks can be seen flanking the caravan's path in the background.

PASSAGE: VERGE (1989)
Acrylic on Canvas - 48" X 36"

There are other, more metaphysical meanings to be derived from this painting, but at the time I was doing it I had decided to "step off the brink," professionally speaking. 1/2 #art
A mysterious woman, hooded in windswept robes, stops at the edge of a rocky outcrop. With palm up, she holds out her hand, and above it floats a transparent sphere containing a solitary flame. At the edge of the cliff, she stands framed by a tall arch in the distance. A circle—an echo set above the vessel she holds—sits high in the arch. Anchored by elegantly curving supports, it suggests something mystical as if it may not exist physically in this world but rather serve as a portal to the next. Behind, blue skies fade to a peach streak across the horizon and the misty hills rolling below. She seems poised to step out into open air but she turns her head back, partially revealing her face. Her thoughts linger on where the next step will lead. Will it be over the edge and down? Or does this passage lead to someplace else?

The American Kestrel—North America's smallest falcon—is famous for its ability to "wind-hover". By angling its body into the wind, rapidly flapping its wings, and making subtle tail adjustments, the bird stays completely stationary in midair to spot and ambush prey like insects and small rodents.

DOORWAY TO THE WEST (2006)
 Acrylic on Panel - 12” x 9”

Another search for the light. Creating the illusion of texture in paint, the process of actually painting it, can be an act of meditation. 1/2
A solitary flame contained in a transparent sphere floats across the threshold of an uneven stone doorway set in ancient ruins. Shadow cuts across the broken remains of the facade. The sky beyond is partially cloudy, lit golden over placid water defining the horizon. In the immediate foreground, three stone steps lead up to the portal, but the ground is overgrown with wild vegetation. Flowers add an occasional splash of blue, white, and yellow at the stub of wall and on the short path to it.
