In Voice & Silence, the seminar I teach at @uvalaw.bsky.social, this week we talked about "What is a fact" & who gets to decide, through the lens of reading The Lifespan of a Fact (the original essay, some reviews, & the play)—I wish I'd had this thread to play with too.

The fragment of the earth that is now me is only on its way through me. It is on its way from having been a tree, a school of fish, a terrapin, a flock of birds. It will pass through all those forms again. —Wendell Berry, from Farming, A Hand Book (1970)

Happy 91st(!) birthday to my Poetry Dad, the brilliant Charles Wright. Later this afternoon, I will call him on his landline phone, which is still & always the most technologically advanced item he owns.
HOW I FAILED

I tried to fit the body of light into the body of darkness.
I tried to lengthen the last landscape.
I tried to unhinge and reconstruct / the language I had been given.
I tried to fit the body of darkness into the body of light.

One beautiful thing abt your current dogs is that they also carry all your past dogs inside of them & if you close your eyes & hug on them, you can feel all your ever dogs with you all at once.

Healthcare in general—& especially critical research like this—is one of the v. best & primary purposes a (good) government can serve. Quality, affordability, accessibility, longevity & longterm investment in innovation. The market on its own can't/won't do it. Abuse of power like this is criminal.

Didn't realize it until it was too late, but I walked into the 4th Circuit today with a handful of dog training treats in my jacket pocket that I hadn't yet taken out from True's puppy day school yesterday. Security: Do you have anything in your pockets ma'am? Me: uhhhhh yes?

this reminds me of the way i’ve seen susan bro speak about her daughter, heather heyer. when a fascist murders your child, you aren’t allowed to just grieve. you have to defend their memory, even their very grave.

I could not be more proud of my colleagues at ACLU of MN & their co-counsel for fighting this fight. The courts alone will not save us, we know this, but it's important to take this terror to task in every field we can. These witnesses are so brave & true.

Is anyone making a line of anti-ICE dog onesies? I've been taking Selma the Whippet (who's from Puerto Rico) to some protests & she'd really like to do her part. I would buy the heck out of someone's dog protest outfit line.
Selma the white & brindle whippet lays in a cream-colored armchair with her head on the armrest & gazes out a window. She is wearing a red harness and a grey collar. She was born without one back paw but she gets around still like nobody's business.

Despite much of immigration law/policy sitting at the fed level, there are actually a lot of meaningful things state law & gov can/shld do to protect immigrant communities: from disentangling local LE from ICE, to preventing data-sharing, to keeping courthouses from being warrantless arrest traps.

Sometimes I can’t believe how fortunate we are that dogs let us take care of them.
Selma the white & brindle whippet, sleeps on her side with one paw extended & resting on the face of her brother True, a tan malinois puppy, also asleep on his side right next to Selma’s face. Too much cuteness & beauty for one photo.
