One of the biggest misconceptions about Ebola is that it is primarily a hemorrhagic disease. It isn't. In the current Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the DRC, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea dominate at presentation, while bleeding occurs in only ~10% of patients. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

1/ The #Ebola situation in DRC is quite serious, but still controllable. An international consortium, led by INSP & INRB in the DRC, is curating an open-access data set and real-time dashboard to aid in the response. Why serious, but controllable? A 🧵 inrb-umie.github.io/EBOV2026_Epi...
Screenshot of an interactive epidemiological dashboard titled "DRC Ebola Bundibugyo 2026," sourced from the latest INSP Situation Report dated 24 May 2026. The dashboard displays a dark-themed map of the border region between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, with Lake Albert visible in the center. Administrative zones are shaded in a yellow-green-teal gradient representing relative risk on a logarithmic scale from 0.01 to 1.00, with brighter yellow indicating higher risk. Red dot markers cluster across roughly a dozen locations along the eastern DRC side of the lake, showing active cases.
A central summary panel reports outbreak size as 994 cases and 228 deaths total, broken down for DRC as 101 confirmed, 893 suspected, 5 confirmed deaths, and 223 suspected deaths. The left sidebar contains layer controls with "Relative risk" selected as the source, a log color scale, and a checked option to show active-case markers. The right sidebar shows zone-specific data for Mongbalu, including 358 observed cases (19 confirmed, 339 suspected, 88 suspected deaths), a modeled relative risk of 1.00, a population point estimate of 159,147, 92 health facilities, PCR testing capacity of 2,000, 2 refugee/IDP camps within 100 km, 9,484 displaced persons over 12 months, and 5,440 Flowminder travel as of March 2026.
The bottom of the dashboard displays partner logos including Institut National de Santé Publique, NRB, INOHA, UMIE, and Africa CDC.

1/ The past 36 hours have been significant for the ongoing #hantavirus outbreak. I still think the risk is low, but we're almost certainly going to see more cases. Here's what I'm watching: 1. Three new positive individuals (French, US, Spanish). 2. Four viral genomes. 3. Ship fully evacuated.
