People aren’t faking their disabilities, they’re faking being well. We know society hates us. We know we will be judged for using assistive devices. Many of us take years to get the courage to lean in to accommodations. Stop judging. Help us build a more inclusive world.

A quote from Dr Stephanie Archer, lead investigator for the PARCC study. The quote reads: "If taking a cancer prevention medication meant someone could spend more time with their children, that's what matters. That's what we're hoping to achieve with Yorkshire Cancer Research". A photo of Dr Stephanie and her two children is visible next to the quote.

Very often "pacing" in books is simply used by people to describe the rate of delivery of things that interest them. Since readers' interests vary wildly, two people can have opposite views about the pace of the same book.

Lookie here, the UK legal definition of terrorism! I'd say this falls under 1b, 1c, 2c, 2d. Again, this is the same definition used to proscribe Palestine Action.
Terrorism: interpretation.
(1)In this Act “terrorism” means the use or threat of action where—

(a)the action falls within subsection (2),

(b)the use or threat is designed to influence the government [F1or an international governmental organisation] or to intimidate the public or a section of the public, and

(c)the use or threat is made for the purpose of advancing a political, religious [F2, racial] or ideological cause.

(2)Action falls within this subsection if it—

(a)involves serious violence against a person,

(b)involves serious damage to property,

(c)endangers a person’s life, other than that of the person committing the action,

(d)creates a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public, or

(e)is designed seriously to interfere with or seriously to disrupt an electronic system.

(3)The use or threat of action falling within subsection (2) which involves the use of firearms or explosives is terrorism whether or not subsection (1)(b) is satisfied.

(4)In this section—

(a)“action” includes action outside the United Kingdom,

(b)a reference to any person or to property is a reference to any person, or to property, wherever situated,

(c)a reference to the public includes a reference to the public of a country other than the United Kingdom, and

(d)“the government” means the government of the United Kingdom, of a Part of the United Kingdom or of a country other than the United Kingdom.

(5)In this Act a reference to action taken for the purposes of terrorism includes a reference to action taken for the benefit of a proscribed organisation

Even ignoring media influence, imagine living a life in fear of 2/3 (?) of the world. Imagine always assuming that everyone "different" you meet is bad. Imagine always thinking others are out to get you. That's making your own life awful on purpose. Why would people choose it?

FWIW I don’t think that AI is an existential threat, nor on track to become one. I do however think that the leaders of the biggest AI companies, AI’s strongest boosters, and some of the folks who are most adept at using it to exploit others are actively hastening along OTHER existential threats.

What makes you extraordinary?
A friend of mine was lamenting that they felt like they wanted to be able to be someone who excelled at something - it didn't matter what - but they felt like they were mediocre at everything they did. There's a lot of arguments around this, about innate talent, the role of luck, the impact of work, nature vs. nurture and whether we can pick up excellence and mastery later in life (we absolutely can given the right environment and opportunities and commitment).

We have had this conversation so many times. You do not have to platform/debate obscene views that are also false. I wrote during a wave of pressure on progressives to compromise with far-right haters:
I can comprehend, and do, that lots of people don’t believe climate change is real, but is there some great benefit in me listening, again, to those who refuse to listen to the global community of scientists and see the evidence before our eyes? A lot of why the right doesn’t “understand” climate change is that climate change tells us everything is connected, everything we do has far-reaching repercussions, and we’re responsible for the whole, a message at odds with their idealization of a version of freedom that smells a lot like disconnection and irresponsibility. But also climate denial is the result of fossil fuel companies and the politicians they bought spreading propaganda and lies for profit, and I understand that better than the people who believe it. If half of us believe the earth is flat, we do not make peace by settling on it being halfway between round and flat.

New research from Dr Isaac Garcia-Murillas at the Institute of Cancer Research, London has shown that a new type of ‘tissue-free’ blood test could provide a cheaper, more accessible way to predict breast cancer recurrence. breastcancernow.org/about-us/res...
New Research

New, cheaper blood test could help detect breast cancer recurrence earlierWhat was the aim?

A liquid biopsy is a highly sensitive blood test can spot breast cancer coming back months before it becomes visible on hospital scans.

Right now, these tests aren’t suitable for everyone, because you need detailed information about the tumour to develop a blood test tailored to the person.

In this study, they wanted to find out if a new ‘tissue-free’ liquid biopsy could provide a cheaper, more accessible way to predict breast cancer recurrence earlier. What did they find?

They found that detecting cancer DNA in the blood was a strong sign that breast cancer was likely to return.

On average, these blood tests picked up signs of recurrence around 8 months before the cancer appeared on a scan.

And the new ‘tissue-free’ test worked just as well as more complex tests that rely on information gathered from tumour biopsies. What does this mean?

This research could help make blood tests to detect breast cancer recurrence available to more people in the future.

If future studies show that acting on these warning signs can help stop cancer progressing, doctors could give extra treatment earlier, and stop the disease before it spreads.

Bringing us another step closer to personalised follow-up care for people living beyond breast cancer.
