"well, DHS says he had a gun"? THAT'S your red line? Guns are sacred when they're strapped to your waist, but magically become a death sentence when they're used as a post-hoc excuse by the government? Either the Second Amendment applies to everyone, or you never believed in it at all. Fucking pick one and own it.
This is exactly what tyranny looks like, by the way. Not jackboots marching in formation, but armed agents roaming neighborhoods, stopping people, killing civilians, and then daring the public to question it. Tyranny is execution followed by a press release. Tyranny is labeling the dead a "threat" so the state doesn't have to explain why someone's life just ended in the street. Tyranny is demanding obedience while shredding due process and calling it order.
And all you so-called "freedom lovers" are fucking fine with it, as long as it's brown people, immigrants, protesters, or anyone you've already dehumanized. Turns out "don't tread on me" actually meant "tread on them." You weren't afraid of tyranny.
You were afraid of losing dominance. There's a difference, and this moment exposes it completely.

excerpt from an FT column Among all these vectors, one of the weirdest and most disturbing developments is the rise of the “neo-reactionary movement” (NRx), also called Dark Enlightenment. The name alone is spooky and intriguing. NRx is an ideology founded by the British philosopher Nick Land and the American software developer Curtis Yarvin (who was recently interviewed in the New York Times). The philosophy argues that democracy inherently leads to social decline, because of the development of deep state bureaucracies that are unable to control oligarchic forces, and that societies should be run like corporations, with a kind of CEO Monarch in charge. As Yarvin has said, “If Americans want to change their government, they need to get rid of dictator phobia . . . One way of dealing with that is . . . hire two executives and make sure they work together and there is really no other solution . . . ”

Are Trump and Musk those people? Some think so. Between Trump’s 19th century-style tax, tariff and territorial-seizure threats, and Musk’s attempted takeover of the plumbing of the federal government (see my column today on why his Treasury meddling, which has been temporarily thwarted by a federal judge in the US, is so worrisome), it feels like there is a kind of self-coup happening in America right now. And some people I’ve spoken to in both political and technology circles feel that it’s been driven by the Dark Enlightenment crowd, which includes many of the people — from Peter Thiel to Marc Andreessen to Musk himself — who stand to benefit most from it. As Alex Karp, the CEO of Palantir (which has seen its stock price surge off the back of a raft of expected government contracts) said recently: “This is a revolution . . . some people will get their heads cut off.”

Welcome to 2025. No one reads your website or watches your TV show. Subscription revenue will never truly replace ad revenue and ad revenue is never coming back. All of your influence is now determined by algorithms owned by tech oligarchs that stole your ad revenue and they not only hate you, personally, but have aligned themselves with a president that also hates you, personally. The information vacuum you created by selling yourself out for likes and shares and Facebook-funded pivot-to-video initiatives in the 2010s has been filled in by random "news influencers," some of which are literally using _ChatGPT to write their posts.
While many others are just making shit up to go viral. And the people taking over the country currently have spent the last decade, in public, I might add, crafting a playbook - one you dismissed - that, if successful, means the end of everything that resembles America. And that includes our free and open and lazy mainstream media. And they're pretty confident it'll succeed because, unlike you, they know how broken the internet is now and are happy to take advantage of it. While I'm sure it feels very professional to continue playing stenographer in your little folding chair at the White House, they're literally replacing you with podcasters as we speak. So this is it. Adapt or die. Or at the very least, die with some dignity.
