📊 How much do governments spend, and what do they spend it on? In the chart, we see total government spending broken down by purpose, such as health, education, and defense, relative to the size of the economy (as measured by GDP). This is shown for a selection of OECD countries.
Stacked bar chart of government spending by category (social protection, health, education, economic affairs, public services, other, defense) as a share of GDP for a selection of OECD countries, where it compares spending composition and shows totals of 28% to 57% of GDP with an OECD average of 43%. Europe's LNG imports have gone from 3% of gas supply in 1990 to nearly 50% today. We replaced Russian pipeline gas with US LNG at record speed. But we replaced one dependency with another. That's why Europe remains so exposed. The answer is transforming demand - not switching suppliers.

In Japan, there are approximately two deaths for every birth— Forty years ago in Japan, two babies were born for every person who died. Twenty years ago, these numbers were equal. And today, the ratio has reversed: one baby is born for every two people who die.
In Japan, the number of deaths each year is around twice the number of births

Line chart of annual births and deaths in Japan from 1950 to 2023. Births fall from about 2.4 million in 1950, with a peak near the early 1970s around 2.1 million, then decline steadily to about 750,000 births in 2023. Deaths start near 900,000 in 1950, remain below births through the late 20th century, then rise steadily from the 1990s and cross above births around 2008 to 2010, reaching 1.52 million deaths in 2023. In many Germanic languages, the word for 'debt' also means 'guilt'. Cevat Giray Aksoy et al. find that using a guilt-laden term reduces willingness to borrow, lowers approval for government debt, & influences firms' financing plans and the framing of fiscal policy. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
Graph showing the evolution of guilt slant over time in German parliamentary speeches concerning debt.
Notes: The green line (left y-axis) shows the intensity of using guilt-connoted terms in speeches supporting public debt, while the red line (left y-axis) shows the same measure for speeches opposing public debt. Intensity measures the frequency of guilt-connoted words in a speech, scaled per 10,000 words. The grey bars (right y-axis) represent the percentage of speeches in favour of public debt in each electoral term.

In many Germanic languages, the word for ‘debt’ also means ‘guilt’. This column explores whether the linguistic overlap leads to greater debt aversion in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. Using a guilt-laden term reduces willingness to borrow, lowers approval for government debt, and influences firms’ financing plans and politicians’ framing of fiscal policy. While support for public debt goes down with use of the laden term, the effect disappears when the purpose of the debt is clear. Linguistic framing may help guide borrowing toward socially optimal levels.
