Trying and failing to torture Christa Pike to death is what the death penalty in practice is all about because it's not about deterrence or public safety, it's about hurting someone because the state decides they deserve it

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

Christa Pike was 18yrs old at the time of the murder. She never knew safety or unconditional love. Instead she was sexually abused from the time she was a toddler. She’s been incarcerated for 30 years but even that’s not enough to satisfy the bloodlust, we have to murder her too. Shameful.

The lust for vengeance in this country is disgusting. In America we call this justice.

Collectively and individually, the pervasive feeling is not that we are weathering a storm but that the storm is going to consume us. It becomes really hard to remain rational or analytical when nervous systems are shot.

Excellent thread w important context for potential approval of GLP-1 drugs within addiction medicine. Ppl in early recovery are especially vulnerable to relapse. Our healthcare system is full of gaps & cliffs, esp for those who are poor and marginalized. Extreme caution is warranted here.

i want to get vulnerable for a sec and talk about my experience with the GLP-1 as someone who had an alcohol addiction. now, at the time i started taking it, i didn't really get cravings anymore except under extreme stress (even then they were very brief). the GLP-1 eliminated my cravings 100%. BUT

In the treatment world, we use “process addictions” to describe many of these. The neurological changes associated with LLM and other tech are an escalation I think, in terms of the their persistence in reshaping human cognition & behavior and because they’ve been normalized/ adopted at scale.

I spent part of Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony cowering and reaching in a bathroom at work. Women are now routinely expected to relive their worst moments in public, to an uncaring, unbelieving and hostile audience to prevent the worst sociopaths from reaching the heights of power in the US.

If politicians really want to “save childhood,” they can start by ensuring every child has three meals a day, a safe place to sleep, and safe access to education. Banning social media does nothing to help kids who don’t have basic resources.

Trump announces the US is planning to invade Iran.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

The United States will be hitting Iran (Whose Navy, Air Force, Radar, Anti Aircraft, and all other forms of Defense, together with most its offensive capability, are GONE!), VERY HARD TONIGHT. At some point in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela, which is working out brilliantly for both Venezuela and the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Sorry women who survive abuse don't talk about it on your preferred timeline and would sometimes prefer not to talk about it at all but feel forced to do so because they feel a moral urgency as they watch their abusers get platformed even though they know they're going to get horrific backlash.

I believe survivors. There's no personal benefit in speaking out, they don't do it for clout, they put themselves and their families at risk by putting their names and faces on abuse. I support people's right to tell their stories on their own terms.

There aren’t enough mental health providers anywhere- we have a national shortage And they aren’t subsidizing more folks going through school and training so there aren’t going to be more And this means communities are going to have to start/relearn to provide normative support wherever they can

The other part of this, of course, would be to eliminate the conditions that lead to criminal behavior in the first place—support families, make MH treatment plentiful & accessible, raise ppl out of poverty, etc. This would cost less money! Mass incarceration does not solve social problems.
