Social worker in public defense. Here for jokes, sports, ragging on the NYPD, and hating Eric Adams as volubly as I can.

developing a safe and reliable driving automation system is such a vast and complex task, which can be undercut by even a little sloppiness, that it's impossible to develop them in a rigorously safe way if you also buy into a utilitarian permission structure that justifies cutting corners short term

I can't imagine how rich you'd have to be not to understand that affordable childcare is THE number one issue for pretty much all parents and also something that keeps a lot of people from being parents

Please go look at any moms discussion group online, where one of the top topics is needing to go back to work but can't afford childcare/wanting to work part-time and still be with the kids but can't find part-time daycare etc etc Also, poor moms work! Maybe more than frequently than rich ones!

One great thing about having grown up watching Wishbone is that I can't read classic literature without picturing the show at least once. You're neck deep in Frankenstein, a story about a guy stitching body parts together, and you think "Awww, and he's stitching them with his widdle paws."

also out of the group of "famous actors doing vo" the guy who most consistently over-performed was Bryan Cranston. when we made record session scripts we always prioritized scenes in groups of like "need" "want next" "if there's time" and he consistently finished all three

I dunno about audiobooks but I worked on animated movies and its MINDBLOWING the difference between "famous actor doing vo" and "famous vo actor" cause like... it could be 20 hours of records for a lead actor, but scratch before screenings one vo guy'd do 3 characters for the whole movie in 2 hours

I work at a nonprofit in NYC with offices in all boroughs. I'm in a less popular borough. Someone who sits on our interview panels doesn't like to hire people who live outside the borough because she thinks they're going to transfer out. Meanwhile our department has notably good retention.

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

Generative AI is harming people today. We don’t need to waste time fantasizing about science fictional scenarios.

To me, this story is about bullying, and specifically a type of bullying where a powerless marginalized person attacks another powerless marginalized person. And I think this happens a lot in certain circles, because it’s too overwhelming to take on the real systems, so bullies attack allies instead

Americans are inherently very sympathetic to “weird but I don’t care”, and it’s unironically one of the better things about the US, which is why the GOP has to eg: make trans issues about YOUR KIDS or YOUR SPORTS to make them wedge issues.

Democrats have been like this for basically as long as I can remember, it's just worse now. I honestly think that's part of why the gerontocracy is a problem - the younger generation hasn't had the same political experiences.

My body is poorly made. To make it hurt less and work better, I need to exercise regularly. (True of all people, but trust me, truer for me.) The problem is that I hate all forms of exercise. At best, I like them less than spending a quiet night in with my partner. I have never met an endorphin.

If you're doing it wittingly that's fine no judgement.
A woman walking in the country while looking at her phone. Behind her is a heard of tarantulas. She has no idea. The text reads: Are you unwittingly leading a heard of goats? Put your phone away! Distracted walking sends people to the ER every year. Who knows what kind of power a human being leading tarantulas can amass. We don't even want to think about it.

It's worth remembering that colleges and universities began as, "what if all of our strange nerds gathered together?" and only then did someone notice 'oh, if we send students to that, it seems to work out.' They began as colleges - collects of colleagues - moreso than schools.

Honestly, this is one reason I think a lot of management strategies imported from the corporate world struggle in universities: the task of managing a university is invariably herding a lot of cats because only strange cats decide that teaching and researching at that level is what they want to do.
