Remembering the guy I used to work with who did a stint in the Nat'l Guard. He was out when I worked w/ him but he would frequently wear his fatigues to work?? Also he was the laziest, dumbest guy I've ever met in my entire life so naturally he now has a v high paying job at an oil & gas company.

I saw somebody criticize wind turbines because their concrete bases get "abandoned in place" at the end of their life. I don't even know if true. But I work in oil & gas and let me tell you: abandon in place is the MO of that entire industry. It's weird how it's only a problem for renewables.

Yard work sucks. I have barely been birding because I have to deal with the social pressure to keep up appearances at home. I plant native but that doesn't mean that all yard maintenance is eliminated. There is still so much to be done.

Yes. The text of the 14th and 15th Amendments explicitly gives the power to decide how to enforce these amendments to Congress. The Civil Rights Movement was an attempt to enforce the Reconstruction amendments. By undoing the work of the movement, you are undoing the results of the Civil War.

Birders who speak exclusively in banding codes are annoying. It's so inaccessible. Most birders who have been birding for many years don't even know most, if any, banding codes. Then obviously it just makes it even harder to become a part of the conversation as a new birder.

It is really unfortunate that there is such a vocal community of long Covid sufferers who, by any metric, are just completely insane. As someone whose life was ruined by long Covid for almost 2 years, those people have done so much damage to all current & future post-viral illness sufferers.

Reading the FT front page story about a Chinese company introducing a battery with a 1500 km range & six minute recharging time & about how two Chinese companies own more than half of the global EV battery market & I am struck by the different realities the US and China occupy. We’ve lost the plot.

Hearing the head of the WHCA—who just days ago participated in a Paramount dinner “honoring” Trump— say tonight that the First Amendment is “fragile” because of a random shooter rather than because of the president sitting next to her on the podium is, I guess, exactly as pathetic as you’d expect.

What’s troubling is that economists have been saying since the start that “even if the Strait of Hormuz was opened right now,” food prices will not peak until mid-2027. That means after the #midterms. The American public are 100% going to believe that freshly-elected Dems made food prices go up.

Shocking to learn that the military is relying on a 3rd party for this. The military has it's own global weather monitoring network because it won't trust public- or private-funded weather stations (even the US NWS). With its budget, you'd think they'd build their own satellite comm network too.

One thing I cannot wrap my brain around about suburban culture is why everyone has outside lights on 24/7/365. What is the purpose of that? It's terrible for migrating birds & insects but besides, don't they enjoy the night being dark? I had to go out & buy black out curtains because of that.

A couple of yellow-bellied sapsuckers are doing what they do in a tree. The first one gasps and says: "Leaves! Finally! Spring is here! Relief from the misery at last!" The second one goes "Oh, this winter wasn't so bad, in fact, the daily highs were well above average–" but this statement gets interrupted by the thoughts of the first bird thinking "I could kill him. No one would have to know."

This is another reason why I don't call myself an "environmentalist." That has become a political term & I don't like that. I also don't care for the fact that so many who dabble in pseudoscience identify w/the term. I prefer "conservationist." It sounds less political & more evidence-based to me.

I'm convinced atp that some people who consider themselves environmentalists have formed a cult-like thing around honey & honey bees. They don't listen to evidence that honey bees are harmful in the US. They're often convinced honey has natural healing powers too. Troubling. #conservation #woo

When Britain was being bombed in WWII, it was "Keep calm & carry on." People were literally getting bombs dropped on their heads & they still had to go to work. Always has been that way during the hard times, before & since. Unfortunately that's the reality.
