Santa Barbara County -entire Central Coast, really- is endlessly beautiful. East Beach is my nearest and favorite. Always something going on here. I pinch myself sometimes, I feel so lucky to be able to live here. Also, the ocean is so warm right now, around 73°, our giant starlit soaking tub.
A panoramic twilight view of Pacific Ocean, featuring illuminated beachfront pavlion and palm trees in Chase Palm Park stand against a purple and orange sky. On the brightly lit sand outside the pavilion, a group of people are silhouetted playing a game, I don't know the name. To the left, big waves at high tide crash against the dark beach.

#ResistanceRoots Dorothy Vaughan was born on this day in 1910 in Kansas City, Mo. She was a mathematician, human computer and computer programmer who became the first African American supervisor at NASA. Throughout her career, she fought for equal pay and advancements and promotions for women. /1
Dorothy Vaughan in 1971, the year she retired from NASA. Vaughan was a visionary pioneer for women in STEM and a foundational architect of the U.S. space program. She broke through the dual barriers of Jim Crow segregation and gender discrimination to alter the course of aerospace history. Her calculations and FORTRAN programming laid the groundwork for America’s early aerospace achievements. By becoming NACA’s first African American supervisor in 1949, Vaughan cracked open doors that had been firmly shut to women of color. She spent her tenure as Section Head fighting for equal pay, promotions and engineering assignments for both Black and white women across the agency. When electronic computers arrived, she taught herself FORTRAN and trained her staff, saving dozens of Black women from layoffs and transitioning them into high-tech careers. Vaughan stands today as a symbol of resilience, intellectual brilliance and the indispensable power of community.

This checks out in my experience on the left
Having studied and practiced mediation and conflict facilitation over the past half-decade, I feel it's important to point out that the dynamics of movement culture can seen as particularly prone to what is called "high conflict." High conflict is seen in the dispute resolution (mediation) field as being characterized by (here, I am paraphrasing the work of Bill Eddy, mediator, lawyer, and therapist):
1) Intense, unmanaged emotions, meaning extreme feelings of fear, anger, anxiety, and unsafety that may or may not be proportionate to the situation
2) Binary thinking - that is, thinking primarily in absolutes of right/wrong and good/bad
3) Extreme behaviors, that is, life-or-death behaviors in non life-or-death situations
4) Blame orientation, meaning an underlying impulse to assign blame

Best places I've lived, I could walk to work. When I opened a business, it was nine blocks from my house. Psyched to live like this again now in Santa Barbara. The "drive time" commute is a policy failure (housing, transportation, jobs, education) that works against human health and productivity.
An intersection on a sunny day features a person riding an e-bike across a multi-lane street. To the left is a white, Spanish-style multi-story building with a red tile roof, while an automotive shop stands on the right. Santa Ynez Mountains rise in the background under a clear blue sky.
