On 26 October, we'll be marking 50 years since the IMF crisis by exploring the politics of economic shocks. What is it like to govern in an economic crisis? What happens when "the markets" turn on governments? And what does this mean for democracy? All welcome! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/politics-a...

such a good eg of why political argument matters - polling previously showed over 60% support for keeping triple lock. Argue to unlock it *for something people also want* & numbers can change. (Obv can change back again if someone makes a good argument against, but either way, politics=argument)

Always fascinating from Peter Kellner This point about the gap between ideal candidate and who you end voting for shrinking. Is such an important trend. As he highlighted where Green voters think the Green can win without letting reform is where there cld be real progressive battles.

Sure, those who promote AI are capitalists. But Marx wanted technological change without exploitation. He wanted dynamism without class. He admitted himself there had been no historical precedent for this. So the question around Marx and AI needs to shift to his own idea of ‘progress’

Seeing a recurring trend that insurgent parties are driving up/down turnout. What is fascinating is about how insurgent deal with incumbency. There ascent thrives of disillusionment but they struggle when the make contact with the ‘system’.

Burnham and Badenoch both now hold advantages of 29-30 points over Farage on a Best PM head-to-head. For historic context, this is equivalent to Starmer's lead over Truss in October 2022 (42-44% vs 13-15%).
