Over the weekend, I had an idea: what if, instead of the objects appearing to sit horizontally in front of you, I modified them to appear vertically? Here are four test attempts.

Students were out of their seats collecting data for a related rates lab today! They compared experimental data to theoretical solutions for the classic sliding ladder, the inflating balloon, and more. A fun day of "math in motion." #ITeachMath #Calculus pbbmath.weebly.com/blog/hands-o...
hree students are working around two wooden desks pushed together. One student, on the left, is holding a long, wooden meter stick that lies horizontally across the desks. A second student, in the center, holds a flexible yellow measuring tape that extends diagonally from the top left corner of the wooden meter stick down toward the bottom right. A third student, on the right, is pointing at a small blue toy car placed near the end of the wooden meter stick. Each student’s hands are visible as they work together to take measurements. On the desks, there are also two worksheets with tables and calculations. The scene captures a moment of active, collaborative learning in a mathematics class.A close-up of a hands-on calculus activity where students are measuring an inflated orange balloon. One student holds the balloon steady at the base, while another student wraps a blue flexible measuring tape around its widest part to determine the circumference. In the background, a stack of calculus textbooks and a data sheet are visible on the wooden classroom desk, highlighting the practical application of related rates as the balloon changes size.A student stands in a hallway recreating the "sliding ladder" calculus problem. A wooden yardstick acts as the "ladder," leaning diagonally against a wall. A yellow measuring tape runs vertically up the wall to track the height (y), while a white measuring tape extends along the floor to measure the distance from the wall (x). The student holds the yardstick, illustrating the physical setup used to collect data on how the rates of change of the sides of the triangle relate to the constant length of the ladder.

A deltahedron I made at #100factorial today with the polydron triangles. It’s a size-three octahedron with three size-one tetrahedra on each face. The whole shape has 120 faces, 180 edges and 62 vertices, with exactly 40% of the edges concave. It took me two hours to make, and some extra hands.
A 3D shape made out of plastic triangles clicked together at their edges.
There are large sections each in a different colour, which are a big flat triangle three small triangles a side, three small triangles of which have been replaced with an outwards-facing pyramid. The colours visible in order of how much of it you can see are green, blue, black, purple, yellow and white.
A piece of paper in front of the shape says
Total faces: 15 times 8 =120
Convex edges: 180 minus 72 =108
Concave edges: 8 times 9 =72
Total edges: 120 times 3 halves =180
Total vertices: 180 minus 120 plus 2 =62
Percentage edges concave = 72 over 180 = 8 over 20 = 2 over 5 = 40%A 3D shape made out of plastic triangles clicked together at their edges.
