When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

LIBRARIES BUY BOOKS. In fact, they buy ebook licenses with rather unfavorable terms because of how much the service benefits the community. The only people getting screwed in this situation are libraries and library users. The only people doing the screwing are publishers.

Friday morning, I was gardening when I checked my phone. A request had gone out for help. For 25+ hours, ICE had been laying siege to a quiet neighborhood in Frederick, MD. Community members were afraid, some didn’t want to leave their homes. ICE vehicles seemed to be lurking on every corner.
