![Jane Schoenbrun first discussed the project in June 2024, describing it to The New Yorker as a funny and grisly story.[4] Speaking with Filmmaker Magazine, Schoenbrun elaborated that a significant theme would be learning to enjoy sex after transition, noting the difficulty of having good sex in the wrong body pre-transition.[5][6] They also indicated the film would engage with the concept of gender deviance in classic horror films like Psycho and Silence of the Lambs.
