My 14 year old is insomniac. He’s been in my room disturbing me. In a long conversation about worms he asked me how do they even reproduce. I, without filter at 6 am & certainly before coffee, replied without thinking, “well, they fuck.” Cue both of us dissolving into laughter

Again excellent. Not criticising your approach (how could we accurately summarise your experience in a few posts?) but the general opacity of “inclusive environment” when it’s isolated to singular settings, not emulated universally. Really important that we know our individual needs explicitly.

I say 1 reason but it’s quite a big one. Other reasons include social demands, increased demand for indiv exec function, personal responsibility, rigidity in uniform & rules.. But when kids know what they need, how they individually work, they can advocate before distress. (Ditto parents).

This is the best and a brilliant inclusive approach. The downside is that students don’t know that they are benefitting from explicit adjustments & when they move to a new setting & begin to flounder, nobody knows which needs were whose, or why. 1 reason kids flourish in primary & crash at upper.

I’ve recently embraced the frilly collared cotton nightdress aesthetic. Combined with my love of cosy cardigans, it’s quite a mature look. So when I opened the front door to the older delivery man just now & admonished him for “efficiently disturbing my coffee in bed” I think I made his day.

It seems to be doing. He’s had several months of twice a week infusions now & the nephrotis has abated, but overall renal function remains v poor. It’s impossible to know if the drug only works while he’s on it, or has lasting effects. If the latter, symptoms will ultimately return.

Anyway, I bluster past these thoughts: I’ve had a pleasant few hours talking about my research with nurses & other hospice staff. About ableism. About frontier children. Pioneering parents. Sharing my art, having a cup of tea made while I do the infusion. Teach them about his condition.

Also, the hospice only do subcut infusions for end of life care. So I got thinking about how this medicine is end of life care. If there are no alternative treatments, only mortal decline, isn’t any drug ‘end of life’? If I took paracetamol for a headache that actually was a fatal stroke..

Have just had a morning at the hospice to give my son’s infusion medication. You may wonder why the hospice staff can’t do it. It is partly because this medicine is available on compassionate grounds from the drug company, not approved by NHS or NICE. It costs £3k+ per dose. My boy is experiment.
