For years I've been looking for a chimney swift roost in Brooklyn, and no birders I talked to seemed to know of a location. This week a few friends and I found one, in a landmarked old courthouse in Sunset Park, and I wrote about watching this incredible fall migration spectacle.

For the past five months the only refugees the USA has accepted are white South Africans fleeing equality & safety meanwhile they are disappearing or strapping ankle monitors on any Haitian they can get ahold of. It needs to be understood how thoroughly connected these two things are.

I was birding at the Ocean Breeze fishing pier in Staten Island today and there was a man sunbathing on a beach chair not on the beach but in the parking lot! I’ve only seen this before while growing up in New Jersey. The bonds between the two places remain strong.

Trump just shrunk Bears Ears by 91% and Grand Staircase-Escalante by 90%. Bears Ears was the first national monument co-managed by tribes. Five tribes spent years building that partnership. It's been walked back. 100,000+ archeological sites now exposed to mining and drilling.

Personally, I think we should let every nation in the world take part. Maybe you could start by staging small, local tournaments, and then the teams that progress from that round all head to one main 'host' country one summer every four years to compete in the 'finals'.

The NPS will launch 850,000 fireworks in the middle of the night. (Last year, they launched 7,000) That will dump perchlorates and heavy metals into the Potomac River and cause the amount of soot and smoke particles to skyrocket (pardon), at great danger to any creature that breathes.
