i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

This one never made it to bsky, I'm still very fond of it.
Digital painting of a deer family of two bucks and a fawn. Both bucks are in velvet, with one's antlers being much larger than the other. They are in a golden field in the evening, backlit by a beam of light from the sun setting low out of frame.

i acknowledge this isn't a line but my real answer spoils too much
Jenny brought Keeper up short.
The ghost was upright spine skewed horizontal black hair trailing to the ground. It was braided through with silver and beads. The gaudy ornamentation she’d seen before remained. The wrists were brown thin paper.
He angled his chin up to look at her. The bandanna made of mothwings pressed tight to the bridge of his nose. The flaking skin; the pockmarked face. His bird legs scraped through the mud.
Jenny kept still as glass with the surety of an animal that didn’t think it could be seen. Then with effort, she slackened the reins.
Like before when the ghost moved a bright blue outline moved first. Now paying all attention, it was so blue it was also red.

ENCOUNTER

We were riding through frozen fields in a wagon at dawn.
A red wing rose in the darkness.

And suddenly a hare ran across the road.
One of us pointed to it with his hand.

That was long ago. Today neither of them is alive,
Not the hare, nor the man who made the gesture.

O my love, where are they, where are they going
The flash of a hand, streak of movement, rustle of pebbles.
I ask not out of sorrow, but in wonder.

i think more people should write things explicitly with the intent of not explaining them to the majority. i think sometimes readers should have to learn and understand on their own. i think we should write more things for our own people and not the masses.

"And finally, the entire story went off on its own, in a direction I'd never expected. As I became engrossed in chasing after the story, I ended up with a much lengthier work than I'd written up till then. This novel took a great deal of concentration on my part. Once I set foot in that world it was hard to extricate myself. Certainly not the kind of work I could do while managing the bar. I realized then, when all is said and done, what a violent thing a long novel is. A writer has to somehow knock it down, and tame it, otherwise he'll be thrown off and trampled. Harmony and cooperation have nothing to do with it. It's black or white-you either win or lose."
~ Haruki Murakami, in the 2024 Introduction to his 1982 novel, A Wild Sheep Chase

one striking thing about old books is that they were NOT written with movie pacing in mind. most modern books are. what i mean by this is the default way to visualize a story in your head is movie scenes now, but it used to only be life or plays so the pacing is different

#RepostYourArt Challenge Day 9: Light "Back to Camp" 2022 It's a diorama built into a side table drawer. I'd love to have the time to goof around with miniatures again one day!
A miniature diorama: ruined hewn stones lay stacked and toppled, moss-covered in the darkening forest. A little coyote person sits in front of a campfire between some stones. in the back, there's a small stack of firewood. A small cup of soup and a spear sit by the fire as well.

One of the many memorable passages in Robert Lowell's "The Art of Poetry" interview with Frederick Seidel in the spring 1961 issue of The Paris Review.
I seesaw back and forth between
something highly metrical and something free; there isn't any one way to write. But it seems to me we've gotten into a sort of Alexandrian age. Poets of my generation and particularly younger ones have gotten terribly proficient at these forms. They write a very musical, difficult poem with tremendous skill, perhaps there's never been such skill. Yet the writing seems divorced from the culture. It's become too much something specialized that can't handle much experience. It's become a craft, purely a craft, and there must be some breakthrough back into life.

Don't make art for anyone else. Don't show it to a single soul. Don't even judge it yourself. Exist inside the process of creation. If the end result is pretty, that's a bonus. But the real result is what happens inside of you, during the creation itself. Embrace that deeply human impulse. Be free.

VERNAL EQUINOX

The scent of hyacinths, like a pale mist, lies between me and
my book;
And the South Wind, washing through the room,
Makes the candles quiver.
My nerves sting at a spatter of rain on the shutter,
And I am uneasy with the thrusting of green shoots Outside, in the night.
Why are you not here to overpower me with your tense and urgent love?

Folks gassing up literary fiction and looking down their noses at sci-fi and fantasy because the former is "grounded in real human experiences", then you look at your average piece of literary fiction and the author's notion of how the real world operates is AT LEAST as fantastical as Narnia.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, I’m thinking about this 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship bio from Harry Bernstein, who published his first novel at age 96, which was written shortly after the death of his wife of almost 70 years. I’m crying, you’re crying, we’re all crying.
From Harry Bernstein’s 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship biography: “I have proven with all this that age need not be a barrier to a useful and creative life. I hope to be able to reach one hundred. I hope to write more books. But with all of this I will never lose the memory of the one thing that gave me the strength and inspiration to accomplish what I have done thus far, my wife Ruby. Memories are supposed to dim with the passing of years. But my memory of her grows richer and deeper each year. I can still see her as vividly as I always did, her lovely, oval face with the smile always on it, her soft, dark eyes looking up at me with such love in them. Her presence will always be there with me until I too am no longer here.”
