“There is something rotten at the core of a society when it increases its wealth without diminishing its misery.”

A man's life can be good. Even though he's good for nothing. A life can be precious. And pointless. Life isn't a means to an end. It is an end. It matters for its own sake. As we love others for their own sake. As an end. Not as a means. We love for no other purpose than to love. That is enough.

The kindness of strangers: Two helicopter pilots flew down low to wave to my three-year-old son – he was beside himself with joy

My brother once lived near a helipad. As soon as my little nephew heard rotors in the distance he’d call out, “Helicopter!” in his Québécois-French accent. I’d put him on my shoulders and we’d run to watch it land. He was twice invited to sit in the cockpit. People are often like this: wonderful ❤️

My son adores helicopters, so we waved as hard as possible as it flew past. Then it suddenly looped and came back around

"What should I do if I need my motherland, but she doesn’t need me?”

I’ve been following the BBC’s embedded reporter, Steve Rosenberg, for a while. If only all, or even most, of our political programming were delivered in such a calm, measured and thoughtful manner. He usually closes by playing a short and typically delightful piece of music at the piano.

The USA’s exorbitant military might notwithstanding, it proved childishly simple to entirely subvert and ransack America. America’s “Achilles‘ heel” is our inbred hatred of others coupled with apathy and cowardice. We conveniently chose to believe that someone else was going to stop him.

The French philosopher, Jean-Luc Nancy, put it rather nicely, "Alterity lies at the heart of Being." There is no other without otherness, and to love another is to acknowledge their otherness. Put another way, the degree to which we are all the same is the degree to which we are all alone.

If the non-banned White House news organizations joined together in a boycott, Trump would fold in a matter of days. Better yet, every nominally credible outlet should stop showing up altogether to broadcast his bloviations. Who needs to hear yet more lies and vile slander from this degenerate?

I’ll be ecstatic if there’s a blue wave come November. Nevertheless, I can’t shake a sickening feeling that if only the cost of living had fallen during Trump 2.0, despite all the other horrors, his party would be returned to office in droves.
