It's not universally true, but my rule of thumb for roleplaying is that if you're playing a character long term and you can't imagine a happy ending for them, that's a red flag for your own mental health.

yeah sure whatever, let lara croft cook potato stew on her phone for 2m0s of damage resistance who gives a shit anymore
a screenshot from the upcoming remake of Tomb Raider 1. lara croft is looking at her phone in the middle of an ancient ruin, and it's showing her a generic crafting menu, and a png of saucepan of stew that apparently her phone lets her cook for "Damage resistance" if she has 6 potatoes

Something I genuinely love about Succession is that every storyline Tom has in an episode basically comes back to Shiv, but he has no weight in her storylines whatsoever. It adds an interesting layer to their whole dynamic as characters.

As someone who is writing a column about art and resistance — when it comes to the expression and practice of politics — I do not think art is anything more than a tool for discussion. Seeing a movie, playing a game, buying a commercial product — these things are not praxis

I don't believe the world is going to end in the next five years, but if it did I guarantee you two things: that Mr Beast is going to try to become the king of humanity, and that he's going to be eaten by a seventeen year old who calls himself the Apocarizztic Bullionaire or something

Fascinated by the idea that some alternate universe doppelganger is telling ChatGPT to make a Ghibli meme of me saying "happy birthday" for the fuckass group chat, as opposed to this blessed timeline, where I'm hand-bashing inscrutable in-jokes for a Discord server of five people
A fake magazine ad: "Dirt, Bugs, Nothing at All: You choose the toppings, the pipe takes care of the rest. PIPED IN QUAIL PASTE. For that piped-in quail taste."

My co-op partner and I have been playing the zombie spinoff of Sniper Elite, which is, no bullshit, called Zombie Army 4: Dead War. A review describes it as being "like a game you'd find in a Dave and Busters" and that is perfectly accurate

It's hard to think about the early days of the most popular TTRPG without remembering one of most iconic designers Jennell Jaquays. Not only did she create epic campaigns, but she also was an amazing artist whose work invoked players' sense of adventure. Read More: goodman-games.com/goodman-art-...

The Dungeon Crawl Classics equipment chapter is three pages long, so as a money sink, we're using the 2nd Edition D&D Castle Guide to construct a fortress complex. This is what peak leisure looks like
Spreadsheet of cost breakdownsTop-down floorplan including rooms like "Cyclops and Watchman bunkhouse" and "Secure Armory"Rulebook text: "Now that all of the major factors that will go into determining the ease with which the castle can be built have been defined, it's time to calculate the total Production Modifier for the castle. To do this. simply multiply all of the PMs that have been generated so far together. It is recommended that you round off your figure to two decimal places when you have completed the calculation."

There's about a million things to blame for this, but I think the dominance of "cinematic" prestige campaigns that are both prohibitively expensive to make and not very much fun to play did a number on the genre.

I feel a tension sometimes between my negative outlook on things, which is pretty reality-based, and the equal reality that quite a lot of the ways we've been handling being depressed on the internet are pointlessly self-reinforcing

People of Earth Check This Out
An alien holds up a skateboard and says "people of earth check out this sick trick"

The alien is now riding the skateboard, balancing on something which is censored out in order to comply with platform terms of service, saying "in case you're curious, yes, this is my dick, and not a similar looking but unrelated alien appendage."

as he continues to glide on the skateboard he says "my kind traveled thousands of years to show you this."

A tear in his eyes he says "countless generations born and died on our ship over eons, all for this moment in time.
Was it worth it?
I think so."

“A whole civilization will die tonight” is the most vile thing a US president has ever said, certainly during the post-1945 era when they’ve had the power to kill civilizations with the dropping of a bomb. I’m staring into the darkness. May this not be one of the most fateful days in human history.

The President of the USA declaring that "a whole civilisation will die tonight" is not something that arrives out of a vacuum. It is precipitated by the widespread international failure to hold USA, Israel, and their allies including the UK, accountable for their actions for many decades

That is another conversation entirely. And yes, largely I enjoy going through that specific era is because of how experimental things are. But that has nothing to do with nostalgia. And I certainly don't agree with "everything being so sterile". Just have to dig deeper to find things you like.

Character I'm running in a Stars without Number game had "Good Question" under his Home Planet section on his sheet, because I didn't have an answer at the time. That spiraled out into a character essentially dedicated to never giving a straight answer about his own backstory, until very recently.

An RP technique that's been popular in tabletop, and kind of neglected in CRPGs, is giving players options to pick that are specific but unexplained instead of generic. Like instead of "Origin: Mean Streets" it's "a city watchman gave you a scar once," and you decide why (then or later)

Been in a great Dungeon Crawl Classics campaign the last few years. It's a retroclone of the Basic D&D set, but acknowledges that the game's period-accurate tone was like 50% kickass, 30% funny on accident, and 20% funny on purpose. DCC doubles down on every category equally. (look at this shit)

The aesthetic of 3D-era Fallout is probably a design masterpiece, and is objectively a home run from a brand standpoint, but I'm kinda cold on it. It makes the pre-bomb era feel like one big Halloween costume.
