My wife and I are being kicked out of our apartment in two months. The buyer of the building wants to be owner-occupier. This has been our home for ten years, and we have 60 days to find somewhere new. Urðr accumulates and I face the sköp. And Verðandi is not finished.

I had a great idea to combine a few of my interests into a (more fun than profitable) project. But I can't draw (well enough to my satisfaction), can't afford an artist (and won't use GenAI), can't afford an Old Norse proofreader, to say nothing of production and publishing. Oh well!

Forkunnar mikil jǫtunkona is moving me around her body to teach me Old Norse. "Ek var á lófa þínum. Nú em ek milli fingra þinna." "Ek stóð á læri gýgjar, en nú em ek í munni hennar, sit á tungu hennar." It makes me pay attention.

Fý! You learn #OldNorse, you understand it's written in Younger Futhark and not Elder, but when you try to render it into runes … the orthography goes off and you're spelling something else almost entirely. I mean, I guess I should be excited there's always something new to learn, but svei.

Giving up on FolkRealms again. It's just open-door to all faiths and beliefs. I thought it was Norse-focused, but that's not the impression that the flood of Americans (led there by Bjørn Andreas Bull-Hansen) had, turning it more broadly Pagan. And definitely no historical or linguistic interest.

The more I read, the more Gýgratrú falls apart, until I have no idea what the hell I'm spending my time on. This has been a very disruptive season. Have to wait until next year to see what remains standing, if anything.

Hutututu Old Norse interjection meaning 'so cold!' Still lives on in Norwegian "huttetu", which may have a slightly broader meaning. Not that I propose to read this inscription as "all this silver gives me the chills", or anything, but I'm just putting it out there.

For #LaugardagsLæti (Saturday shenanigans), I'm grilling Reykjavik-style hot dogs for an art pop-up. I drove all over town for suitable ingredients, found an Icelandic beer, and just mixed up the remúlaði. Hoping the weather holds out—but I'll grill in a storm if I have to. #cooking #OldNorse

I'm going to grill some Icelandic hot dogs for a little art pop-up in my neighborhood tomorrow. Drove out to IKEA for the appropriate mustard and fried onions; was lucky to find Einstök Arctic Lager at the local liquor store. I'll mix up the remoulade tonight and we'll be good to hook.

“I can’t translate this word into English” means you can’t translate it into *one word* (e.g. you can express what “Schadenfreude” means in English). This is true of my favorite hard-to-translate word in Old Norse too: “troll,” not a species but a person/being with some elements of magic and menace.

The North Shore felt less like scenery and more like transition. The mists, basalt pillars, wind and waves carried a presence that moved me deeply. I was reluctant to leave because it awakened something in me that I couldn't release once I'd touched it. #ÓðinsdagsǪnd (Wednesday spirit) #OldNorse

I spent five days in Grand Marais, three of which were learning blacksmithing at North House Folk School. I made my own grilling implements—skewers, steak flipper, roasting fork, spatula—plus a copper ladle and spoon for my wife. No matter how tired I was, I came back to life at the forge.

There's kind of a joke, I think, that saying anything in #OldNorse necessarily sounds more impressive. Here, I count from one to ten in American English, then again in Old Norse, using @norsebysw.bsky.social 's cues for pronunciation, as I understand them, rather than modern Icelandic.

Progress doesn't announce itself dramatically. Sometimes it's a month of small destinations and decisions, or the kettlebell lifted until your arms shake. Sometimes it's just doing the day's work, instead of waiting to become the person who will do it. #FrjádagsFrami (Friday progress) #OldNorse

Harvested this monstrous amount of basil from my plants. Laid them all out on the dehydrator trays, and then they withered up into this (fig. 3). Now that whole splay is caught up in two jars, sitting in my cupboard. I hope they turned out well.
