Doing a lot of walking lately, scouring the neighborhood for rental properties, recording my favorite areas and scenes. Picked up Jesch's 'Women of the Viking Age,' stopped at the Giantess's Glade to say farewell to the location. #LaugardagsLeið (Saturday walks) #OldNorse

I saw a cartoon someone had made of three separate marital and funereal stories, melded them into one, declaring this to be a traditional Viking marriage ritual. I tried to call it out, and this 22y.o. scrap said "we're trying to make history more interesting." Then I think I combusted and died.

I'm sure it will be delightful and edifying, even if it's old enough to drink in a US tavern. I find it important to lean in this direction when I encountered reenactment or fantasy groups who desire to diminish or erase the importance of women in medieval Scandinavia.

Stopped by the library to pickup a book order, then visited the Giantess's Glade to share it with the gýgr there: Women of the Viking Age by @judithjesch.bsky.social . Very excited.

If intention work and manifestation are real, this is the time for me to try them. If they're false, what have I lost in a few moments of meditation and grounding? Asking Huginn and Muninn to make clear the good path to a new home. #FrjádagsFrami (Friday progress) #OldNorse

This molten-gold sunset over Lake Harriet. This is one of the things the buyer of my building is taking from me. He wanted my home, he has a lot of money, so he's kicking me out. Not because I did anything wrong. And I won't get to casually walk down the street and see this spectacle anymore.
A breathtaking sunset in brilliant yellows, oranges, blues and purples, reflected on a calm lake, with the silhouette of branches in the foreground.

I went to Amazon UK to indicate the GenAI author and plagiarized works, but they required a postcode. At random I chose Carlisle, Cumberland. Got curious about the town, went into Google Street View, and immediately landed myself in the changing room of a bridal boutique.
A champagne-colored changing room with a French-court-upholstered chair, a small stand with flowers and a picture, a rack of dresses in a mirror, and a sign for Carol's Bridal Boutique.

It's just for my own entertainment. I don't know how much work it would take to actually read the original Icelandic manuscripts, but I like the idea of mocking up everyday sentences and expressing myself in it.

#Grilling around my wife's food concerns: grilled chicken with rosemary and lemon zest, crispy thyme potatoes, a mushroom/leek relish, caramelized lemon and a dollop of yogurt with basil, lemon, salt/pepper. No garlic, gluten, soy, or tomato. #Týsdagstekja (Tuesday grilling) #OldNorse
A 22" Weber kettle grill, the grid covered with four seasoned chicken breasts, a dozen halved potatoes, a grilling wok filled with mushrooms and leek, and a lemon half directly over orange coals. The plated dinner: the chicken is covered under the savory mushroom-leek relish, the potatoes are lightly charred and crispy, and the caramelized lemon and yogurt sauce rest on the side.

"Viking" was a verb, not a genetic marker, something people performed a few months in the summer and not everyone did it. So it would kinda be like future archaeologists referring to US people as "Spring Breaks."

I prayed to the Mǫrn, doing intention work on finding a new residence, and part of that is doing my own searches. So I'm walking around, many blocks away, I pass a Little Free Library and what do I find but this.

I lose the local businesses where the clerks knew my name. I lose the tree-lined streets, the lakes in walking distance, the Giantess's Glade. I lose the stupid wild turkeys who make the rounds looking for seed. Every morning is colored with time running out. Everything I see is temporary.

My wife and I are being made to leave our home. We've lived here ten years. I've supported the community, improved the property, brought neighbors together. But someone with enough money bought our building and declined to renew our lease, so we lose a place to live. #LaugardagsLíf (Saturday life)

In an update from Secrets of the Ice, researchers reveal that this year alone, 48 prehistoric arrows have been discovered and recovered from melting ice in Jotunheimen. While these finds offer insights into ancient hunting, they also signal an urgent & sobering reality: the oldest ice is now melting

I watched the film Hamrammr that debuted on Youtube today because it was billed as being in Old Norse (it is, though the pronunciation is Modern Icelandic, not that of the Viking Age). At any rate glad to see a movie use Viking-Age Younger Futhark runes rather than anachronistic Elder Futhark slop!

My wife and I are being kicked out of our apartment in two months. The buyer of the building wants to be owner-occupier. This has been our home for ten years, and we have 60 days to find somewhere new. Urðr accumulates and I face the sköp. And Verðandi is not finished.

Not "no deity," as the Vǫlsi was offered to a Mǫrn. We may guess who that was: Þjazi was "father of Mǫrn" in Haustlǫng. It's interesting that there's a wedding party game (Faroese "senda drunn," Norwegian "passing the Volsi") where people pass a phallic object and tell dirty jokes.

I had a great idea to combine a few of my interests into a (more fun than profitable) project. But I can't draw (well enough to my satisfaction), can't afford an artist (and won't use GenAI), can't afford an Old Norse proofreader, to say nothing of production and publishing. Oh well!

Fý! You learn #OldNorse, you understand it's written in Younger Futhark and not Elder, but when you try to render it into runes … the orthography goes off and you're spelling something else almost entirely. I mean, I guess I should be excited there's always something new to learn, but svei.
