The next issue of Forgotten Ground Regained will be on the theme "Speculative Visions", i.e., poems that can be classified as science fiction, horror, or fantasy. This gruesome little 16th century poem--one of the last poems of the native tradition--is pure horror. alliteration.net/poetry/horri...
... and you thought horror was a modern invention ... "Horrible of Hue" (16th century), imposed over a leering zombie face.

Late to the party this time. I’m reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Michael Smith. I’m about ½ way through. I can’t wait to see how it ends. (a joke. I’ve read it many, many, and still more many times.)
A striking woodcut style of Sir Gawain on his horse.

I’m going to write something longer about invented poetry forms, but this meter I’m working with has me thinking: it’s not just about finding the natural cadence within the form, but letting the form reshape your language too

I mean the whole reason the Heliand was written was to convey the story of the gospels in terms familiar to Germanic tribespeople, which is how you get the Apostles being called thanes in the war-band of the great chieftain Christ.

From spare moments on a train: Youmu resisting Roukanken's eldritch power by not thinking. In two halves, each using a form that itself comes in two halves.
Youmu art from Wily Beast and Weakest CreatureI sometimes catch a whisper from my sword,
or so I think. It urges me toward
a mind more honed, a life more disciplined.
Or so I think. I never have quite pinned
the muffled words it speaks. Just noise I hear.
But that it cheers me on is surely clear.
No heirloom from my absent grandpapa
would ever wish for harm. And when I spar
with Lady Yuyuko, I tell her so.
She says she’s glad that this is what I know.

Sword lies not silent,
but says hazy
words left wavy.
It must be warm comfort—
a grave gracious
to grateful soul—
or so my lady
seemed swift to suggest
when I went for advice
on the words mazy.
