ME/CFS cases (or controls) were defined using multiple lines of evidence in 2 independent UK Biobank cohorts, and 1 independent All of Us cohort. We needed to restrict genetic ancestry to Europeans to minimise the chance of spurious associations. Next, we used TarGene to estimate the effects of genetic variants on ME/CFS risk. Finally, we replicated 7 variants that were both significant in a Discovery GWAS, and in one of two Replication GWAS.

We Still Owe Clinical Trial Participants More
Back in 2000, when I was Chairperson of the Consumers' Health Forum of Australia, I chaired the development of a joint National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Forum national statement on consumer and community participation in research. This month I saw that it has recently been revised—the second revision since "our" version was published in 2002. Over 1,100 people attended consultation workshops for this process, and there were more than 200 written submissions.

Scotland's patients experience longer hospital stays than patients in England. But the outlook is more favourable on some other measures. 📊 Read our summary: buff.ly/m6EaiB6
Line chart comparing average hospital length of stay, excluding day cases, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland between 2016–17 and 2024–25. Headline reads: “Patients in Scotland stay about two days longer in hospitals than in England”. Subheading reads: “Average length of hospital stay (excluding day cases)”.

The chart shows England consistently having the shortest average hospital stays, falling from around 4.9 days in 2016–17 to 4.3 days in 2020–21 before rising to 5.1 days in 2024–25.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have longer average stays, generally between six and seven and a half days. In 2024–25, average stays were around 6.8 days in Scotland, 6.7 days in Wales and 7.4 days in Northern Ireland, compared with 5.1 days in England.

The gap between Scotland and England is around two days throughout most of the period. Northern Ireland has the longest average hospital stays by the end of the period, while Wales and Scotland remain at similar levels.
