The change we need at this point is less to break the two party system than to break the Republican Party, which has broken the two party system.

I don’t know the current figures but when I was but a child my father explained to me that it costs way more to kill people - because to do so justly *requires* access to courts of appeal - than to incarcerate them for life. Which makes the calculus of the death penalty clear.

Quite evident Republicans are thrilled they have a deal to weaken bedrock environmental laws—the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, & National Historic Preservation Act. This bill is one of the greatest attacks on environmental protections in U.S. history.

The key lessons from coal we've identified from decades of literature: 1. Markets undermined sustained energy transitions. 2. Longstanding legal protections will fail in the face of sectoral decline. 3. Market-mediated transitions heighten structural risk.

1. The Senate "permitting reform" bill will (likely) be released this week. 2. It is a data center & energy development bill, not a climate bill. 3. It will erode bedrock environmental safeguards—in particular the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act.

The "permitting" debate sadly remains anchored in logic set by Joe Manchin in 2022. Ds in the Senate have not evolved their politics or policy—a function of: 1) tech, energy, & finance lobbyists dominating the DC debate; 2) poor D party leadership; & 3) reactionary politics re: affordability.

Here's a good test case for our framework, demonstrating how a real incident can be turned into a false "rigged election" rumor or narrative. Here the DOJ highlights a case where a postal worker discarded mail that included ballots, and uses that to suggest voter fraud and untrustworthy elections.

Rumors about “rigged elections" are now a fixture of U.S. elections, leading to diminished trust in election results & democracy (broadly). These rumors can sometimes be hard to debunk, esp. in their early stages. Our UW team has identified the 6 common ways that election integrity rumors mislead:
Infographic titled "Six Ways 'Rigged Election' Rumors Mislead." A two-column table pairs six labeled categories with descriptions. The first three categories are:

No Evidence: The rumor is entirely unsubstantiated. There's no evidence to support the rumor.

Fake/False Evidence: The rumor is based on fake or synthetic evidence (e.g. AI-generated content), manipulated evidence, or false witness testimony.

Misinterpreted Evidence: This rumor is based upon real evidence that has been misinterpreted or intentionally mischaracterized to create a false impression.

A black banner then introduces the final three categories: "Real Evidence, Real Voting Issue, False Narrative."

Exaggerated Impact: The rumor centers on a real issue with voting but falsely insinuates or exaggerates impact on election results.

Ignored Remedies: The rumor centers on a real issue with voting but ignores and/or obscures the remedies that would address this problem

False Blame: The rumor centers on a real issue with voting but either falsely attributes intent for an accidental issue or places blame on an innocent party.

This fawning book promo is basically tailor-made to infuriate everyone on this site. Here's the author casually hand-waving away an incident in which 2 billion gallons of water were released into a dry riverbed because Trump wanted to "turn on the taps" and painting the DOGE guy as the real victim.
During his time at Interior, Hassen was almost like a Where’s Waldo character, popping up in key moments that caught the country’s attention. When wildfires struck California, Hassen made an unusual decision to fly to the state to grill local officials about why the state’s largest water plant wasn’t running at full capacity.

The image of him at the Jones Pumping Plant in California became one of the first posts from the DOGE X account identifying its members — prompting a flood of hateful messages and threats to Hassen and his family, he said.
