I realize there is no practical way to prevent their political action (at least not in the USA) but the idea of a freedom so you make everyone lose freedom seems too paradoxical to work.

Your favorite Anthropic so-called "whistleblower" said that the rationalists have "specialized minds" that allow them to see that the end is about to be brought on to us by a magical machine god. Parroting the cult leader (of the rationalists, the R in TESCREAL) who says the same about himself.
His autobiography even opens with a parable: as a small child he threw his favorite squirtgun off a third-floor balcony rather than accept that his mother could lend out what was his, and felt complete when he heard it hit the pavement. He goes on to describes himself as a specialist in the technological transformation of the human species, one of the few people alive with the standing to steer it. He identifies with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the one person who sees the danger clearly and has to act while everyone else gets on with ordinary life.

People on Blue Sky are adamant about total shunning for connection to oppression even voting. I draw the line more loose--at malevolence, which is what the video doesn't say. The MAGA and Republicans have genuine malice. They cavort with evil. White supremacy is evil. But everyone draws it there.

To be honest when it comes to people 'on the other side' I am curious why they think they like they do so if they will let me grill them maybe we could have lunch. But I'm talking about, e.g., Never Trump Republicans who maybe reason in bad faith--not anyone remotely Naziish. They make me sick.

To expand on this: Bigotry isn't a result of an innocent misunderstanding, or not having all the facts. It's not a choice made rationally, defeated with a rational argument. Bigotry is a self-protective, foundational belief used to help make the world make sense to them. Debate won't change that.

There is a reassuring fantasy among those who have critiques of unfettered left-wing governance that right agrees with these critiques and will temper the left when in power. But the contemporary right isnt that, it's an apocalyptic doomsday cult that lives in an alternate reality.

At some point leaders buying a castle, other lavish purchases sexually harassing women, pledging but not giving, saying Black people are stupider, then doing massive economic fraud and --after many years --not freeing money for use but holding it in funds raises doubts about the future reliability.

They don't relinquish control of the funds and utilitarians have no reason to be modest so it will help their credibilty if the books are more open and when more pledges become actual donations. And it's hard not to notice the other ones and the posh crypto/AI lifestyle.

To be fair, I’m not doing so great with men. I told my most recent date that I was working on a novella. “Because you’re Mexican?” he asked. I asked what he meant. “Isn’t a novella a Mexican novel?” Before him was the guy who confessed over drinks that he didn’t “believe in Helen Keller,” because there was “no way she actually flew that plane.” I asked if he meant Amelia Earhart. “Who?” I slept with both of them.

Another dumb --and scammy thing-- thing about effective altruism is that giving money to people directly is very effective. Pick one of the poorest countries gradually distribute your ill gotten gains to individuals of this country. (They will flap hands but their whole thing is weak.)

They desperately need someone to persecute. In the face of successful mass repression they would try to pick on people for something trivial but they crave extreme suffering from a scapegoat.

Ozma @rowyourbot.bsky.social · 3h
Let’s say that the governments of the UK and US created a mass conformity law that would require every outlier to conform to whatever the persecutors tend to want so their target is invisible. I wonder how long it would take for the transphobes and other bigots to re-invent witch conspiracies.

My point is only most people probably don’t believe the AI CEOs have mental illness. But we don’t know what the heck they are doing or why. So to avoid their messed up actions being complicated or scary it’s also likely some might attempt to make such a claim.

Ozma @rowyourbot.bsky.social · 4h
I wouldn’t but I interpret the word when used by others. It rarely means mentally ill or depends on a belief that the person has an illness or any discrete, specific condition. It usually refers to a type of behavior. Usually temporary condition like ‘dogs go crazy when they see squirrels.’

One problem is some people fall outside our ability to comprehend or reach them and it’s obviously not the same as mental illness —often it’s they don’t give a shit about others. But it’s hard to understand why and frightening so some will offer mental illness as an explanation. But this is wrong.
110
Ozma @rowyourbot.bsky.social · 5h
‘Crazy’ has so many connotations though. Calling someone crazy doesn’t always mean they are mentally ill. It can mean they are unreachable by reason or making themselves unintelligible (often by choice), are acting outside norms, they (or it) are intense, extreme, excessive, unpredictable.
