The central issue facing the US; the national society has entirely internalized the ethos that "it's okay if I got paid". This is what you get when your culture's ethics are built around the bedrock of "it's okay, I/we/they got paid so of course I/we/they had to do it."

Until the medical and public health establishment comes to grips with the fact that the political right wants to destroy and discredit everything they stand for, we’ll never have accountability. Makary was pushing COVID bullshit for years before literally, happily going to work for RFK Jr.

1. Let's not say goodbye to Eric Schmitt just yet. His story is about more than a power-mad senator falling on his face. It's part of a larger story about the Republicans defending the leader of an insurrection against the United States.

Canonical has finally allowed the do-release-upgrade to move from 24.04 to 26.04 as of three days ago or so. There's an article on The Register: www.theregister.com/os-platforms... Article's subhed is "Here's how to proceed." I have an answer to that. How to proceed? Don't. It's broken.

Good thread, very much worth reading. I'd add that the "college culture" aspects of this in particular and recognising that the issue is pretty global within western "higher" education even if the forms differ from nation to nation go a long way to explaining all <gesturing around broadly> this.

See also this amusing fun with logic between ICE and Gillian. prospect.org/2026/09/24/j...
ICE and DHS did not respond to requests for comment on the rulings, but the Prospect’s earlier story about Doe’s case spurred some bizarre responses from DHS. When asked about DOJ’s claims in Doe’s case and flight data showing an ICE charter plane preparing to fly to Ghana, a DHS representative who did not identify themselves responded, “Please provide an A# or DOB”—referring to Doe’s “alien” number and date of birth, a ludicrous thing to ask for given that neither were needed to respond to court filings or flight data.

Hours after the story published, DHS spokesman Micah Bock sent another email, writing: “When you fail to provide us with the necessary information to verify your claims, you’re wasting our time, which is ironic considering we at DHS can’t think of a bigger waste of time than writing for the American Prospect.”

As a matter of logic, a writer wasting time at the Prospect and also wasting DHS’s time would have been fitting, not ironic.

I can't believe no one marked the 25th anniversary of the Wall Street Journal edit board saying 9/11 gave George W. Bush "political capital" to use on "faster tax-rate cuts" and judicial nominees (www.wsj.com/articles/SB1...)
A New Presidency
Sept. 19, 2001 12:01 am ET

Gift unlocked article
So much for Florida, and Jim Jeffords's Senate betrayal too. Those teapot tempests happened in a different country a long time ago. In the wake of last week's terror attacks, most Americans are putting their trust in President Bush and want him to succeed. This gives him an historic opportunity to assert his leadership, not just on security and foreign policy but across the board.George W. Bush now finds himself in far better political circumstances, with nearly universal public support before he undertakes any military action. The public will not soon want to hear from critics who appear to be angling for partisan gain. This means that for the next few months Mr. Bush will have enormous political capital to do whatever he says must be done to help the war effort and buttress national strength. But the lesson of history is that Presidents must spend political capital or they will lose it. And when they spend it and win, they accumulate even more capital. The temptation here will be to settle for a lowest common denominator stimulus, for the sake of bipartisanship. But Democrats will be wary of opposing measures that Mr. Bush insists are necessary for growth. Already Dick Gephardt, the House Democratic leader, has said he's willing to look at new tax cuts. In return for spending that Democrats surely want, Mr. Bush has a chance to insist on faster tax-rate cuts that would increase the incentive to invest not just next week but for years ahead. This will help restore business and stock-market confidence.Mr. Bush can also now demand a complete government as soon as possible, including judicial nominees. Last week the Senate whipped John Negroponte through to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, after months of Democratic stalling. If nothing else, Mr. Bush can insist that the Senate give his nominees quick up or down votes, so he can appoint others for the jobs. As for judges, we suspect Democrats in the Senate will hesitate to carry out Borkings that clearly undercut Mr. Bush's leadership.

The house quickly became a hub for events. Eric Zhu, 19, a tech entrepreneur, said he used to sneak into parties there when he was about 13. No one checked anyone’s age, he said, and “it was pretty crazy.”

This is why things like right-to-repair and stop killing games are so important: just making sure people retain the ability to fix their own games and protect them from artificial damage puts pressure on companies to *make good products* instead of maximizing how to best trap gambling addicts.
