I missed the Lab Conf this year so didn't get to hear the mood music on AI, and while I appreciate that Narayan has a difficult job, the assertion that" Technology as an industry has not engaged sufficiently with politics and the British public" is simply not true.

Since at least the early 2010s, lobbyists from tech companies have been crawling all over govt and there is a revolving door for advisors and sr politicians between Westminster and tech companies. Right now, George Osborne is at OpenAI, Matt Clifford at Anthropic and that is latest in a long line

Tech has engaged super-intensively. The problem is that industry has become ludicrously entitled and self-important at the same time that the harms it is associated with have become ever more obvious.

My baptism of fire in this respect was the Cambridge Analytica scandal - at Doteveryone, we published some research on public attitudes to tech the same week that story broke - and whatever the ins and outs of it, you can't say it proved tech companies had not sufficiently engaged with politics
