June 23 is St John’s Eve — Midsummer Night. In Welsh folklore, it was a night to beware the Cŵn Annwn —ghostly hounds from the Otherworld — who roam the lonely roads and byways of Wales in eerie procession. Listen carefully, they might be closer than you think... #Wales #Folklore

#MysteryMonday 🔍 What appears to be a mermaid is actually a siren. According to Greek mythology, sirens were dangerous creatures, whilst mermaids were gentle. This siren is combing her hair and singing, in order to lull some sailors to sleep. Once asleep, she will attack and tear them to pieces.

Good morning y'all, today is an important event in Slavic mythology, Noc Kupały. It's focused on women and finding love, where you make a flower crown and see if it floats and you'll find love. Then at night there is a bonfire and finding a mystical fern flower in the forest for good fortune.

This meme is a cheeky blend of mythology and religion with a dose of absurd humour.

It shows a stone statue of Jesus (most likely one of the famous ones like Christ the Redeemer or a similar representation), captioned:

Unique to Ireland is the Morrigan, the Phantom Queen, the crow goddess of fate, prophecy, and battle. She is oft depicted as three in one, making three sisters into a single goddess. Her warcry is death; her forms are many, her prophecy fatal. #FolkyFriday 🖼️: Mikadze
The three Morrigan among a field of battle, each goddess with a crow; the youngest is a maiden, the middle with a sword is the mother, and the faded crone is on the right.

Black cats with white spots on their chest are known to the Scottish as Fairy Cats, cat-sith, huge as a dog with an attitude to match. Prone to stealing souls, on Samhain if given a saucer of milk they offer blessings, and a curse without. #FolkloreFriday

In a Flemish folktale, a farmhand went to a pond and asked the water spirit who dwelt there to bake him a waffle. Back on the farm, a waffle was waiting for him. He returned to the pond and she dragged him into the water. He's still there, and the spirit can often be heard singing. #WyrdWednesday

Bonus #ArtAdventCalendar: Another slightly sinister winter folklore print: my #linocut of Perchta, also known as Frau Perchta or Berchta (or Bertha in English), a figure from Alpine folklore, who visits during the 12 days of Christmas. Her name may come from “the bright one” 🧵
My linocut card of Perchta in pale blue on white agains a background of birch trees. She is illustrated like a playing card with two versions: right side up young and beautiful, with crown, fur coat and holding a flame in her hand and upside down a terrifying crone in a hood with a knife. Text at the top reads “Happy Holidays” and at the bottom “Perchta.”

The Christmas card was invented in Victorian times, but many people disliked cards with birds on. This was due to a folkloric belief that wild birds entering the house heralded a death in the family. #FolkloreSunday #folklore #history #Christmas #GothicAdvent #Yule
