Call to fact-check columnists after another anti-MetroLink article from Colm McCarthy
A new article by economist Colm McCarthy against the planned 19km MetroLink from central Dublin to Swords has prompted a call for newspapers to fact-check their columnists. Councillor Feljin Jose, the Green Party's spokesperson on transport, made the call after McCarthy wrongly claimed in the Sunday Business Post today that "The only available evaluation of MetroLink’s costs and benefits was released as part of the TII’s preliminary assessment in 2022."

So let's leave aside ID verification and look at the actual heart of the problem - social media companies don't want to ban right wing and abusive accounts because the engagement makes them money, and because doing so would piss off their rich supporters who actually hold those beliefs.

It is increasingly evident that Adam Smith and Karl Marx were both correct that the biggest threat to capitalism is monopolies. Both also appear to be correct that the initial blame lies with weak government and regulation to prevent them. It is yet to be seen which is correct in regard invitibility

But *because* antitrust worked, we forgot how corrosive monopolies were. When the neoliberal economists of the Reagan/Thatcher era told us that we were missing out on the "efficiencies" of vast corporations, we blundered into their trap, letting them define the debate.
