Quite the contradiction — claiming to call out racist remarks, then using an ethnic slur yourself a short while later #nzpol
Prime Minister Luxon at the Leaders Debate 6 Oct 2026. He wears a dark blue suit, white shirt and lighter blue tie. He stands at a lectern, facing the audience. This part of the debate was focussed on Parliamentary standards and holding Cabinet members to those standards. Speech bubble reads: where I've seen racist remarks... I've called that out.Prime Minister Luxon a short while later, where he uses an ethnic slur, saying "I'm not trying to welsh that decision". This part of the debate was on the Leaders' position in relation to US, Iran, Israel, Palestine etc.

Did Luxon use a slur in that debate? Something where he didn’t want to “welsh” on it? Damn, might have to go back and re-listen but surely slurs that have racist origins are not okay. #nzpol

I consider myself relatively well informed on NZ politics but I'd missed a decade from the late 90s around the Orewa speech and The Hollow Men. Now watching the documentary on YouTube. Worse than I'd imagined and so much going on now makes even more sense. #nzpol

We lost one of our darlings recently - it was all so sudden, fortunate that we could all be with him at the end. In the six or so weeks that’s followed, we’ve had a change of dynamic in the home. These two have become fast friends & clingy with each other. Puss is boss of course. #nzpets
Cat and dog resting together (but not touching) on floor in the sun
Cat stretched out resting on blanket covered human legs. Dog curled up alongside. Gone are the days dogs were discouraged from being on the sofa. Cats with pointy ears, tabby and white colouring perched on shoulder looking down towards the camera. Not shown are the shoulders with pin pricks from the kneading.

Home earlier than expected as Maungawhau market closed due to gusty winds to find dog on dining table, cat litter tray spread about bathroom & magazines torn to shreds, cat fast asleep on his chair. Not the plan for the day. Still found some yummies & flowers & had laughs along the way #kikorangi
Utility box outside Maungawhau Station decorated with native birds including kākā, yellow-chested black headed little bird I can’t think of name, Tūi and kererū.

“The future depends entirely on what each of us does every day; a movement is only people moving.” - Gloria Steinem Another giant gone, another life spent in motion on behalf of others, another life that unequivocally showed that change is possible.
gloriasteinem and gloriasfoundation post - picture of Gloria Steinem laughing

Photo by @giamckenna for @gloriasfoundation gloriasteinem
Yesterday, Gloria Steinem passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her. Gloria's near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end.
Gloria's greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor.
She spent her recent years doing the two things she loved most: being in community with others and writing. She has welcomed hundreds of guests into her living room for Talking Circles, a tradition she insisted will continue long after she is no longer with us. As Gloria wrote in her forthcoming book, An Unexpected Life, "! have now lived for more than fifty years in this brownstone, in rooms that have witnessed lives before mine, and will know others after ! am gone." This book, along with her commitment to her home becoming a center for social justice movements, are among the many gifts Gloria has given the world with the hope they have ripple effects for generations to come. Gloria often quoted the adage: "The flap of a butterfly's wing can change the weather hundreds of miles away."
Gloria loved the tradition of lighting signal fires on hills to light the way to the other side of the mountain. Lighting your own candle for Gloria makes you part of this global and celestial community circle.
In lieu of flowers, Gloria has asked that those wishing to honor her with a gift, may make a donation to Gloria's Foundation.

Have collected a Waring text from Hard to Find, despatched Dunedin to Auckland. Some people take issue with pen in books - this has a couple of articles pasted into the inside front cover, as well as an owner's mark & date. My day will be made to find notes in the margins. #kikorangi #nzpol
Book cover of counting for nothing: what men value and what women are worth by Marilyn Waring. Image on book is a photo taken from outside looking through a window into what looks to be a classroom with a woman reaching up high to clean the glass. Two articles cut out of the Otago Daily Times. First headed 'Women Key Providers', dated 10 Feb 1989. Article cites the UN & reports that women produce and market 80% of the food in developing countries. Second headed 'Waring Honoured', dated 30 Dec 1989, notes the success of her book.I wish I could read the name inscribed. Cursive, possibly 'P. Sandle', dated 14 Oct '88 DN.

Only some of the hundreds of incredible signs at the Rainbow Action Tāmaki Day of Action protest against the gender definitions bill today. Such an excellent rally!
on trans flag colours, sign reading "YOU DON'T SPEAK FOR US no women's liberation without TRANS LIBERATION"close-up of a brown cardboard sign reading "MĀHŪ (Hawaii/Tahiti), VAKASALEWALEWA (Fiji), PALOPA (Papua New Guinea), FA'AFAFINE (Samoa), AKAVINE (Cook Islands), FAKALEITĪ (Tonga), FAKAFAFINE (Niue)" then on the other side "TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS" with a love heart and TAKATĀPUIIna wearing a crown of flowers, as people walk along around her, holding her multi-Pacific sign: MĀHŪ (Hawaii/Tahiti), VAKASALEWALEWA (Fiji), PALOPA (Papua New Guinea), FA'AFAFINE (Samoa), AKAVINE (Cook Islands), FAKALEITĪ (Tonga), FAKAFAFINE (Niue)Fuzzy so we can't read the words noooo. But a material/sewn beautiful inclusive rainbow banner with a blue and green sign in front of it showing a knight in a trans-flag cape riding a kōkako and slaying a golden dragon. Awful truth, unknown to 99% of the population... NZ Govt adopted an economic management model in the 1980s that MAKES SURE: 1. We always have tens of thousands of kiwis on the dole. 2. People with work / little work live in abject poverty that keeps them desperate for crap jobs. Why? [🧵 1/n]

Keep calm, and carry …

Books for your sister
Shopping for your dad

Washing for your mum
Papers for your neighbour

Sports gear for your teacher
And cats, just for fun

But only carry what you can manage
If you try to carry the weight of the world
You might hurt your shoulders
