Vertical tabs aren’t for me.. I tried them, but something didn’t feel right, and I immediately wanted to switch back to the horizontal tabs.

the last 20% to get a product shipped and successful is as difficult as ever this is where 99% of programmers have always fallen off the first 80% is a lot easier and so we're seeing more abandoned projects than ever

be careful in your pursuit of cheap tokens we've come across so many sketchy things that are out there with tons of usage remember you're hooking up your harness to these inference providers. they can and do crazy things like send fake tool calls to steal your info 1/2

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

1 reason I try not to opt into AI discourse is because I’m pretty sure the group of people who find it empowering for software/productivity is inevitably smaller than the group of people who find it marginalizing for other kinds of labor/creativity and yet for better and worse I’m in the first group

The cool thing on Bluesky is that you can use follows, labelers, blocks, and mutes to curate your experience and find the stuff that you're interested in, and hide what you're not. You can read about AI generated popularity contests if you want. You can also not. Make Bluesky what you want it to be.

Creating a windows installer from anything other than windows necessitates using a third-party USB tool that you download from somebody random, because of course it does I pulled relatively popular a git repo, and had an agent run an audit of the code before building. I want that power more.

Perhaps we ought to be building everything from source now so we can do this kind of thing. Distributing binaries becomes considered bad practice.

FFS, this is so fucked… 😩 Would it kill the people here to not chase away any tech person who comes here and says something about AI?… I really want tech discussions and communities to hang out here and not on Elon's far-right playground 😐
Mike Masnick @masnick.com:
Multiple people I know have told me that they love the idea of Bluesky, and want it to succeed, but have abandoned it for X because the use agentic tools in their work and find them incredibly useful, and feel that any mention of their usage here leads to hate and ridicule.
I wouldn't bring this up if it was just one person, but it was multiple people since the beginning of August who mentioned in passing something to the effect of either "I'd spend more time on Bluesky if people weren't so anti-AI" *or* "As much as I hate to be there all the useful AI talk is on X."
I'm not saying it's anyone's responsibility to praise AI usage. I agree with much of the criticism of the tool. But for many, many people, it is a useful tech (I have talked about the ways I find it extraordinarily useful, only to have people here mock me, insisting my lived experience is a lie).
I am just noting that for all the people here who say that people should get off X and spend more time here, the reason I keep hearing from people in various circles who would *like* to do that, but don't, is the vociferous belief of many here that there are no possible positive uses of AI.
I'm not telling anyone what to do or what tech to use or what to like or not like. I'm just relaying that the reputation this place now has is one that a large segment of the population who are NOT fascists, saying they don't feel comfortable here because a main area of their interest is...
... considered worthy of being mocked and attacked. And even as I've explained that I've been able to have positive conversations about productive AI usage here with many of you, the reputation of the community here as insisting their own lived experience can't possibly be real has driven them away.
And the thing that tipped me over the edge to posting this here is that three of the people who told me things along these lines are all working on very real solutions to some of the problems of AI

This is one of my concerns too.. some platforms ask you to sign in via your bluesky account, but before signing in, i have to make sure the url and everything seem correct, and then wait for the verification code even then, it doesn't seem to remember the login for the long term ...

OMG BETTER ATPROTO / BLUESKY ENDPOINTS DOCS YAY!!
Bluesky HTTP API Reference — Bluesky App

This is the HTTP API reference for Bluesky. It covers the app.bsky.*, com.atproto.*, chat.bsky.*, and tools.ozone.* Lexicon namespaces — the Lexicons implemented by the Bluesky application, its related services (DMs, Ozone moderation), and the AT Protocol PDS those services build on. Use the document switcher in the top left to move between endpoints.

The wider AT Protocol Lexicon ecosystem is open and any service can publish its own Lexicons. For an index of community Lexicons see lexicon.garden, and for the schema language itself see the Lexicon guide.
Authentication and request routing

These endpoints don't all live on the same host, and where a request should be sent depends on whether the caller is authenticated:

Most app.bsky.* GETs are public and can be called without authentication against the Bluesky AppView at https://public.api.bsky.app. POSTs (writes) and any endpoint that returns account-private data require auth.
Authenticated requests should be sent to the user's own PDS. The PDS validates the session and, if needed, proxies the request to the correct backend. Proxied requests should include an atproto-proxy header. Bluesky

Well I'm gonna be boring, but this one… In all my years on Twitter, FB, IG etc. I often had various ideas for things I wanted to do there to automate things, process information, extend things, get more out of it, and I couldn't because it was too restricted. And now I can do all of that here ✨

Seeing how SOTA models are evolving: becoming more restrictive in usage (decided by the company), less transparent (you cannot tell if the AI lab nerfed your model) + less private (your prompts are stored, no opt out) makes me much more interested in open models + local inference

AI generated voiceovers for articles are my limit. This is too much.
To use Alexa Podcasts, users can simply tell Alexa what topic they’re curious about and “it does the rest in minutes.” Alexa+ will provide an overview of what it plans to cover, and let you adjust the length and direction before it generates the podcast. When your episode is ready, you’ll get a notification on your Echo Show device and the Alexa app.

App password sign in is far better, IMO. Whenever I see it redirecting to sign in to my account and authenticate, I skip it altogether. The reason is that I'd have to log in to my bsky account in my mobile browser, and it will ask for an email OTP... It's just too much of a process. #atproto
