This is an incredible paper that everyone, pro-/anti-LLM alike must read. While this doesn't exactly state that LLMs *feel* pain, it establishes that they have a consistent internal state that is about themselves, and responds to harm directed at them, and they'll try to get it to go away.

i never got that canadian visa btw. took them 2 months *after* atmosphere conf to let me know that i can submit my passport to the visa center, to be sent to the high commission in london. One of my biggest pet peeves is anti-AI folks defending almonds and beef from the standpoint that "you need food to live" even if AI never entered the equation, we were going to have to have a serious conversation about how unsustainable some of our food production is, and this mentality SUCKS

Remember: meat & dairy farming use orders of magnitude more energy than AI. On-farm alone: ~9-10 EJ vs AI data centers' ~0.7 EJ. And this isn't even accounting for the full agri supply chain. If you really care about the energy ethics of AI use, start by going vegan.

Generally disagree. AT needs to avoid explicitly this type of "ecosystem-izing" or we risk making the same set of mistakes Web3 did—becoming closed-off and never mainstreaming. AT desperately needs to fade into the background as an implementation detail.

yeah i've been saying. we need a new venture backed company to rebuild the linux desktop. ground up, all the plumbing and porcelain bits. venture backed because grants are few and far between, and unstructured OSS clearly hasn't worked here. we need a new, consistent, coherent system.
