I'm embarrassed. It's embarrassing.
Screenshot of another political ad posted by Jared Isaacman on his official agency account, this one bizarrely claiming that Trump "is a builder. He's rebuilding our industrial base in America, infrastructure right now, he's rebuilding our military, he's helping rebuild our space program."

The question here is that with Microsoft shoving Copilot down our throats, and with Google shoving Gemini into everything they offer, how long will it be until anything we right down in a Word or Google Docs file will also be targetted?

The obvious conclusion (to me): if you have proprietary research & you upload it into the Plagiarism Nexus, it's not YOUR proprietary research anymore. Behave accordingly.

People die trying to cross the Channel between 2 of the richest countries on Earth. And 2 of the largest colonial empires, which spent centuries fighting wars, stealing resources from all over the world and arbitrarily drawing borders. There really is no excuse to let these people die.

Cannot tell you how much I hate this & how ashamed & angry I am that @ukri.org have taken this step. We KNOW this sort of gAI is socially biased, we KNOW it favours slopAI output over human-written. Our research landscape is falling apart due to underfunding, & they do this? it's *appalling*

This is it. This is what everyone is enabling by humoring genAI: you spend months writing something that took you years to get at, for an opaque algorithm that a few control to spit a number and cut you off right there and then. This is what we're up against 🧪

1/ People keep saying AI is inevitable. History disagrees. Plenty of technologies were called unstoppable, and societies stopped them or shrank them down to a niche. A thread 🧵
evitable
adjective
uk /ˈev.ɪ.tə.bəl/ us /ˈev.ə.t̬ə.bəl/

able to be avoided or prevented:
He believes that world war is evitable.
Inevitable suffering due to persecution is to be distinguished from evitable sickness.

Apparently this is arms-length funding in some way rather than core research council. I don't care. No UKRI money should be or not be disbursed with AI involvement. I cannot believe anyone in that organisation thought it would be okay.

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

In the UK, APC is paid by the taxpayers, via Research Council funding to individuals and universities. Billions directly into the pockets of publishers. Funders should not allow paying for APC - this money could be used to fund STFC facilities for example. Researchers, support Diamond Open Access!

You have to choose. You can't be nice to everyone. Appeasing corporations and billionaires means abandoning everyone else. When it comes to policy, it's us or them. And for far too long political leaders in this country have sided with them. If Burnham is to survive, this is what he needs to change.
