🗃️ Some really great research by @chasewoodruff.bsky.social, especially in consulting with @romeoguzman.bsky.social to contextualize Evans’ narrative. 10/10 no notes, only to say most salient point is that legality is not fixed, rather, it reflects politics & social values of historical moment.

It's no accident that immigrants end up in Louisiana detention centers. Immigration judges there deny 3/4 of all cases, the 5th Circuit is extremely conservative, and local communities in the state are turning a profit locking-up immigrants in their jails www.nytimes.com/2025/04/29/o...

ProPublica looked into science grants that Ted Cruz's team flagged as "radical" and "neo-Marxist" and, uh. This would be good comedy if it didn't matter so much www.propublica.org/article/ted-...
"Developing a device that could treat severe bleeding. It seems to have caught the committee’s attention for using the words “victims” — as in gunshot victims — and “trauma.”
Creating biosensors to detect infectious diseases. The grant appears to have been tagged for the repeated use of “POC,” an acronym often used for “people of color” but in this context meaning “point of care” — that is, the place where people receive medical treatment — and “barrier,” referring to a part of the biosensor itself.
Designing eye-tracking technology for diagnosing and treating concussions. It appears to have gotten flagged for referencing “traumatic” brain injuries and the “status,” meaning the condition, of patients."

INBOX: today marks the start of 40+ disciplinary hearings for Columbia and Barnard students over last spring’s occupation of “Hind’s Hall.” per the release: “In 2024 alone, Columbia and Barnard opened 300+ disciplinary cases, suspended over 122 students, and evicted over 50 students.”
For Immediate Release
January 08 2025
Beginning January 8th, 40+ Columbia University students will face disciplinary hearings before the University Judicial Board (UJB, Columbia's adjudicating body) for alleged involvement in the Gaza Solidarity Encampment and liberation of Hind's Hall, a campus building renamed in honor of Hind Rajab. Six-year-old Hind Rajab spent her last days besieged in a car, as the israeli occupation force (IOF) used 355 bullets to murder her and the paramedics sent to rescue her. 460 days into the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, Columbia remains complicit in the assassination of Hind and ever 400.000+ Palestinians.
After months of administrative ineptitude, the UJB scheduled 40+ student hearings in the
middle of winter break. The university has failed to produce any individualized evidence despite hours of interrogations and has repeatedly extended the disciplinary hearing timeline, now over 8 months since the alleged incidents. The sole "evidence" the University has produced thus far is sealed arrest records, which cannot be legally possessed-let alone used to discipline students-under New York's sealing statute (CPL §160.50).
