What would happen if data providers didn’t just deliver data and tools, but co-constructed them collaboratively with their communities? That’s the question we explore in our paper “Ten rules to increase the usability of earth observation mission datasets”, published yesterday. 🧵🧵🧵

That is for the entire computational domain we used. Another way of putting it is that the finescale flux is about half as large as the submesoscale flux through the ML base when integrated. Exact number depends on surface forcing etc of course!

Some key findings include: Finescale turbulence does a significant (~25%) amount of the total vertical exchange! This only happens in specific places, and is energized by the fronts themselves! Because of that, this is likely missing in models that don't resolve turbulence. 3/n

This is a really interesting multi-scale fluid dynamics problem (my personal favorite motivation), but also one with lots of practical importance as we try to understand how well represented these exchanges are in models that don't directly resolve turbulence. 2/n

An important result is that finescale roughness enhances turbulence in the wake. This is particularly pronounced in a flow regime that is common in the very energetic Southern Ocean, such that finescale topographic roughness could increase prior estimates of global seamount mixing by 30%.

Jacob Wenegrat @roguewave.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
We wondered what this would do to seamount wakes (believed to be the 'stirring rods' of the ocean). Turns out the wakes can be quite different with/without finescale bathymetry. Large-eddy simulations with and without smoothing of the seamount show the difference.
