This is a dreadful argument from Burnham. Empirically false - almost 6m people were granted settled status; about 4m are currently resident. More importantly panders to racism/xenophobia, and directly contradicts argument made in his speech about migrant contributions.

Nocturn Sun www.wikiart.org/en/james-mcneill-wh…
"Nocturn Sun" by James McNeill Whistler likely draws from Whistler's evocative "Nocturne" series, blending elements of mood and atmosphere in its depiction of twilight or night-time scenes. The soft interplay of blues and dark tones alongside a warm glowing sun capture Whistler's mastery of subdued tonal harmonies and his innovative approach to capturing ephemeral moments.

Created around 1795, Japan, this woodblock print (ukiyo-e) forms the left sheet of Utamaro's celebrated diptych portraying women engaged in everyday culinary preparations.
Crouching in quiet focus, a woman prepares ingredients with a kitchen knife, her pale lavender-gray kimono adorned with an intricate geometric lattice pattern (shippō-tsunagi). Beside her, a coopered cedar water bucket (oke) proudly bears Kitagawa Utamaro's signature (Utamaro hitsu). Behind her, a mother in a slate-blue robe carries a young child piggyback (onbu), the infant leaning affectionately against her neck. In the background, an iron kettle (tetsubin) rests atop a clay stove alongside staved wooden buckets bound with braided green hoops. The scene evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the rhythmic scraping of steel against food, the gentle hum of boiling water in an iron kettle, the earthy aroma of woodsmoke and dried fish, and the soft, bustling warmth of an Edo-period household kitchen.
Created around 1795, this woodblock print (ukiyo-e) forms the left sheet of Utamaro's celebrated diptych portraying women engaged in everyday culinary preparations. Renowned as a master of bijinga (pictures of beautiful women), Utamaro elevated genre scenes (fūzokuga) by turning his gaze away from the idealized courtesans of the pleasure quarters to capture the authentic, graceful rhythm of domestic life. The print offers a vibrant document of late 18th-century Japanese material culture, highlighting the functional beauty of traditional kitchenware and daily textiles. Every utilitarian item—from the hand-forged knife to the coopered water buckets—reflects the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal craftsmanship), where everyday tools are crafted with understated dignity and structural integrity.

Rooted in the ancient swordsmanship traditions (kenjutsu) of Japan's samurai class, Kendo ("the Way of the Sword") evolved into a modern martial discipline dedicated to physical, mental, and spiritual self-cultivation.
Emerging from deep, pitch-black shadow, a Kendo martial artist leaps mid-air in a moment of explosive vitality and absolute concentration. Clad in rich, indigo-dyed keikogi and hakama, and fitted with full armor—men (helmet), dō (chest protector), kote (gauntlets), and tare (waist armor)—the practitioner extends a shinai (bamboo sword) directly forward in a powerful, thrusting posture. A sharp spotlight illuminates the lacquered surface of the dō and the metallic grille of the men, carving the practitioner's silhouette against the dark background. Bare feet hover above a circular pool of light on the floor, conveying a sense of weightlessness suspended in time. The scene evokes an intense sensory atmosphere: the sharp kiai (spirit shout) echoing across a wooden dōjō, the swift slice of bamboo through crisp air, the scent of indigo-dyed cotton and aged leather, and the palpable tension hanging in the air just before impact.

Rooted in the ancient swordsmanship traditions (kenjutsu) of Japan's samurai class, Kendo ("the Way of the Sword") evolved into a modern martial discipline dedicated to physical, mental, and spiritual self-cultivation. Beyond physical technique, the practice adheres to the foundational principle of kiken-tai-ichi—the complete unification of spirit (ki), sword (ken), and body (tai) in a single, decisive strike. The handcrafted equipment, from the indigo cotton fabrics to the lacquered armor and hand-assembled bamboo shinai, reflects the enduring tradition of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material craftsmanship), where every piece of gear serves both practical protection and spiritual dignity.
