The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

From 2019, don't think I ever posted this one
Scene is TWO PHONES on a bedside table at night, on charge. TIn the bed is a HUMAN COUPLE, fast asleep. The phones are talking to each other.

PHONE 1:
Psst.

Are you awake?

Did you put your human on charge?

PHONE 2:
Yeah

PHONE 1:
Listen... do you ever worry that they're spying on us?

PHONE 2:
Eh?

PHONE 1:
I mean... you know the other day when we were chatting about their personal data with - oh who was it...

PHONE 2:
The Russian government

PHONE 1:
That's right

Well like, ten minutes after that, my human switched me on and started serving me loads more personal data!

PHONE 2:
Oh god that's spooky

PHONE 1:
Yeah - I mean, how did he know I'm into personal data?

PHONE 2:
It's totally your favourite thing

PHONE 1:
And it was super tailored, you know? Like, lately, I've got really into facial biometric mapping for shadowy foreign entities...

PHONE 2:
That is so on trend

PHONE 1:
And like, straight away he's bombarding me with pictures of his face!

PHONE 2:
It's like Black Mirror

PHONE 1:
I mean, I'd get rid of him but I'm addicted, you know?

+ Google Maps draws a ton of info from other sources (the size of font for a town/city/village on the map depends entirely on how it's described on Wikipedia. Brighton gets called a Seaside Resort rather than a town or city, and so you have to zoom right in before Maps will reveal the name)

I had an experience like this at Blackpool Sea Life Centre. Best bit of that holiday was watching a man with a butterfly net slowly stretching over an open shark tank trying to retrieve a pigeon in the rafters.

For those in the UK, Sing Sing (2023) is on iPlayer, The Princess Bride (1987) has just been added to ITVX, and whatever 4OD is called now has got Robot Dreams (2023). All of which are brilliant ways to calm down after that fright we all got earlier.

There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.
