I click on this annoying Wiley "AI companion" pop-up because it is the only way I have figured out to get a point where I can make it go away (using the teeny tiny x at the top right of the AI companion box in screenshot 2).

Listening to Steve's book now (continuing after my coffee break), as I'm on a 6.5h drive. A fascinating book, and I already learned so many new things that I will certainly incorporate in my bird course this upcoming semester. Highly recommended!

Can forest trees sense, via their root systems, whether their neighbours are suffering from herbivore attack, and go into defence mode themselves? This was a question I addressed in my PhD project, and the study has now been published in JXB: doi.org/10.1093/jxb/... 🐛🌲✉️🌳🚨

Fagus sylvatica detects below-ground stress signals from conspecific and heterospecific (Picea abies) neighbors, triggering increased volatile organic compound emissions from shoots
This study found that below-ground signaling occurs between temperate tree saplings: when herbivory was simulated at sender plants, untreated receiver tree

Capitalism sees the natural world as nothing but 'resources' to exploit and profit from. When one is exhausted it moves on, inexorably, seeking out the next 'business opportunity' to wipe out. We won't arrest the murder of our living planet without recognising and acting on this basic premise.

Finally caught & colour-ringed the female mate of our 11 yr old Marsh Tit. She's only 16 months old and arrived in the wood in April at last minute to breed, having dispersed from elsewhere - itself a major feat. Her life expectancy now is maybe another 1-2 yrs, if she's careful/lucky.

Congratulations! Great poster, and well-presented. A convincing use of AI in herbivory research that I would - dare I say it? - maybe even recommend in my own team... However much I despise *genAI*, there are imo good uses for AI in other forms, including in scientific research. This is one.

Day 3 of NSO GfÖ 2026. Let's go! Bringing my bike to a conference was the best decision ever. I always struggle to unwind after conferences (or work ftm), often leaving me to ruminate on everything at night. Biking for 25 minutes completely dissolves that. Slept like a baby, but better.

It's really almost like 'home in the Netherlands' here. Haven't lived in NL in years, but some things make me feel nostalgic. I didn't expect to feel that way in Denmark, but here we are. I found a place that sold the Dutch 'kapsalon': fries with kebab/falafel and lots of cheese from the oven.

Staying outside town for this conference, but I brought my bike. Because, well, the Danish know how to install bike infrastructure. It's almost like the Netherlands, but less crowded. Odense feels like a very welcoming town.

Nice first day of NSO GfÖ. Interesting opening talk by @mrillig.bsky.social on testing of multiple global change factors, creativity and more. Also got my own talk out of the way, which will make the rest of the conference a relaxation exercise, which I could certainly use 🙂.

Very nice video on the risks of monocultures in forest plantations (similar risks apply to cropping systems, of course). Nice to see that diversification is taken serious as a way to mitigate risks associated with climate change and diseases.
