Look, I too wish there wasn't a jagged divide across our political culture. But right now, that divide is over questions like "who gets to be human?" or "is it OK to kill children if they live in the Middle East" or "should members of the administration be allowed to strip the government for parts"

Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship on Wednesday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas. Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes without adhering to certain conditions. 🧵

It's time for the public to learn that public services cannot run on the concept of doing more with less. When there are large cuts to services that rely on public monies, people should feel the results. Libraries, universities, etc. need to stop trying to lessen the visibility of funding cuts.

The response when progressive policies that help millions of people are proposed... "How will you pay for it?" The response when the richest 1% ask for tax cuts, or banks ask for bailouts, or defense contractors ask for more contracts... "How much do you need?" It doesn't have to be this way.

This is the same logic they used to push for a $5/mo minimum premium for ACA enrollees regardless of income. "It's just $5/month! What's the big deal?" When you only earn ~$2,000/mo, literally EVERY dollar counts. $45/mo can mean the difference between having your electricity turned off or not.

When you're constantly just trying to keep the lights on and put food on the table, you don't have the time or energy to fight the system. Keeping people hanging on by a thread isn't a policy failure; it's how they keep us too tired to push back.

A friend found this clipping in some old files. Haven't seen this before. Mind blown.
Color political cartoon by Danny Hellman from the New York Press dated October 6-12, 1999. In it, Donald Trump and his then wife Marla Maples being shown a model of the White House with many added stories and a shiny gold T on the top, with Taj Mahal towers on the side and flags flying with a T. It is labeled "Proposed White House Renovation." A ghoulish Philip Johnson says, "Granted, It's in violation of several of Washington D.C.'s landmark and zoning codes. But of course as president of the United States..." Trump, licking his lips, says, "It's tremendous, Philip, when do I move in?" The caption beneath is Spectacularly unqualified egomaniac Donald Trump contemplates a White House run"

Second section is titled "March on Washington (August 1963)" with one question.
