Vaccines are among the best of inventions. There's a high chance that without them, and the herd immunity they can deliver, you'd either not be here or would face a lifelong disability: *whether or not you had them yourself*. It seems crazy to have to point this out, but we forget it at our peril.

This gang of sex abusers preyed on young children in Walsall, and got away with it for years. What could possibly explain the failure by Nigel Farage, Elon Musk and the Tories to call for a public inquiry about it?

brilliant episode (hope Naomi’s starting to feel better now- Xmas lurgy is so horrible) Heard this earlier and thought I would quote it in a post -beat me to it - but I also love the genuine positivity juxtaposition of @iandunt.bsky.social (I know!!) on policy areas (listen to find out which)
Ian Dunt discussing positive legislative changes (listen to the episode to find out which areas in particular)

“We are just not taught, like, it's incredible how, particularly in the sort of mainstream press, there's almost no conversation about any of these things. And yet in 10, 15 years time, we will look back on it and be like, my God, that was a really significant period of sort of full-scale engine room policy change. And apparently at the time, no one had anything to say about that whatsoever.”

Judge sentences a rioter who, draped in a union flag, ran into police officers “like a rhinoceros”. #riots #uklaw
Judge Christopher Parker told Wheatley: Police officers do not go to work on the basis they should be set upon by idiotic , violent hooligans. Over the last fortnight the country has had the pleasure of watching young men and women from all kinds of heritage and background, striving in France. Well-honed athletes who are proud to be Britons and of whom Great Britain is proud. You chose to don a flag and move at what may be your top speed - but that is when the parallels end.

The 2nd group, encompasses the first, but also those who have no truck with violence, but are more likely to share idea riots are borne out of of 'legitimate concerns'. This group tend to believe in the notion of two tier policing. They represent around 20% of the public.

Given a binary on whether or not the rioters are 'standing up for' or 'shaming Britain' 73% say the rioters are shaming Britain and 17% say they are standing up for Britain. Around half of Reform voters say that the rioters are standing up for Britain.

Only 14% of the country say that the people participating in the riots speak for people like them - compared to 86% who say they do not. Again Reform voters tend to be outliers here, although a majority still say they do not speak for people like them.

What do people think the motivation for the riots are? About 23% say legitimate concerns about immigration, around a third say far right ideology and racism, but the biggest group - nearly half say a desire to engage in violence and criminal damage.

i'm not often proud of this country, but these headlines have got me feeling some things
BBC headline reads: Peaceful atmosphere at Sheffield Counter Protest

Article image shows hundreds of people crowded together.

Text reads: Around 1,500 people are taking part in a counter-protest in Sheffield this evening.

There is a large and visible police presence. So far, it's peaceful but noisy, with chants of "our streets, not their streets".

Passing vehicles that toot are greeted by cheers from those assembled.BBC headline reads: No signs of disorder in Liverpool

Article reads:

Hundreds of people are outside an Asylum Link office in Liverpool to support refugees and immigrants.

The windows of the centre had been boarded up ahead of an anticipated protest tonight by far-right groups in the wake of the Southport stabbings.

But so far there's no sign of right-wing demonstrators nor of any violence.

People have been chanting that refugees are welcome here and holding up banners opposing fascism.20:55

BBC headline reads: Anti-immigration protesters outnumbered in Southampton

Article reads: Around 10 anti-immigration protesters have arrived in Southampton this evening, while hundreds of counter-protestors are marching in Grosvenor Square, chanting "racists go home" and "racism off our streets".BBC headline reads: 'Bristolians wouldn't allow anybody bring chaos into the city'

Article reads:

We estimate there are now about 1,500 people at the counter-protest in Bristol's Old Market area.

There are lots of signs, "migrants welcome", "hope not hate". There are chants and people climbing on benches to get a better look.

It's really calm and pleasant so far.

One man, Habib, originally from Gambia, told me Bristol is a "very vibrant city, and a very welcoming city".

"Bristolians would not allow anybody to bring chaos into the city. That's why I feel like I'm going to join the Bristolians to stop what is going to happen tonight.]"
