It's clear that quite large sections of the right - including some well-known politicians and newspaper columnists - actively want an explosion of violence this summer. And if it comes, they'll stand there clutching their matches, petrol cans and aerosols saying "we told you so".

In short, Starmer has taken a massive hit among Labour voters, for no gain elsewhere, while boosting Farage's popularity, including doubling his ceiling among Labour voters. I.e., the political scientists were right, Morgan McSweeney was horrendously wrong.

The anger we see everywhere, that is fuelled by bad faith actors, distorts realities. It obscures achievements, exaggerates problems, heightens fears. Instead of solutions, it looks for culprits. The change everyone wants, starts with truth. #GoodMorning, everyone.

Would very much like “heading off the threat of Reform/Farage” to STOP being the way government decides on policy. It’s done nothing but profound harm since 2016 and Farage is still going strong. It doesn’t work for anyone, except him. on.ft.com/42eewsY
Sir Keir Starmer is set to publish a white paper next month setting out the government's plans to cut net migration to Britain, with changes to the graduate visa route billed as an important part.
The move is part of his effort to head off the challenge to Labour from the rightwing Reform UK party.

Posting footage of deportations impresses no one. Reform voters don’t think it’s enough hatred and the rest of us turn away from yet more performative cruelty. The Labour vote disintegrates. If Labour can’t decide who it should be talking and listening to, then it ends up without an audience.

What I do not understand about the enthusiasm for preservation of a "culture" is: 1. A culture that has ceased to innovate and is blind to other creative influence is dead. It is preserved in the sense that stuffed animals are preserved; and 2. If it has to be forced upon people it is not a culture.

I have just sent a message to the Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington.
From Germany: Thank you

Ma'am,

I am German, born in 1968. All my life I've been taught and told we must learn from our history. My generation might not be guilty, but we have an obligation. A responsibility to remember and to ensure that our history will not repeat.

But these days the lesson from history seems that we don't learn from history.

At the same time, and I hold on to this, history shows that these movements of cruelty and hate exhaust, run their course, run out. And that there are better days ahead.

I try to take comfort from this, but I struggle & think of everyone whose life, feelings, safety, confidence, happiness, and humanity are hurt & sacrificed along the way.

My history, my family, they have sent me into this world with a special responsibility. My job is to help that my country's crimes are never repeated.

I'm not religious (bear with me) despite having attended a Catholic school. But I respect and recognise that many choose the guidance and comfort religion offers. It doesn't matter where people's decency and kindness originate or where they are grounded. As long as they're there.

As a former Australian Family Migration Officer and former migrant, I also know about immigration. I know the law. I know the people. I have heard all their stories. The sides of newcomers and hosts. I know about the importance of respect, fairness, and a culture of welcome & have seen what a difference it makes.

So today, with these two hats on, as a German and migration officer, I applaud and thank you from the bottom of my heart. For your plea, your kindness, your courage. I hope you are safe. You have done a good and very brave thing.

Bettina

Musk's rhetoric is classic great replacement theory, combined with extremely emotive material about rape. If your response to that is to focus on your domestic enemies rather than the moral horror of his output, you are part of the problem.

There are no words.
A scene from MASH

War isn't hell. War is war and Hell is hell, and of the two, war is a lot worse.

How do you figure that, Hawkeye?

Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?

Sinners, I believe.

Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. But war is chock full of them.
Little kids, criples, old ladies.

In fact, except for a few of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

This is a wonderful, wonderful 🧵 from 🧵s. On immigration, integration and growing up between two cultures. #IFeelHuman
Thread by husseinnaji_ on Threads:

I was born in Iraq but grew up in Germany.

Here are 8 life lessons I learned growing up between 2 cultures:

1. Gratitude is healing.

In a time when most countries didn't want us, Germany opened its doors and welcomed us.

It allowed me to grow up without war & terror.

This gratitude shifted to other areas of my life.

Which was a game-changer for my mental health.2. Racism is a symptom of adversity.

I've faced a lot of racism here.

When I paid more attention to how people behaved, I realized:

None of them are happy.

This alone made me more resilient.

I don't feel attacked anymore - I feel sorry for them.

I'm sceptical that 'deliverism' and a few hanging baskets will stave off far right. Socio-cultural & emotional factors have an impact on people's susceptibility to populism, eg,. perceptions of out-groups. The economic issue I'd focus on is good work. Work socialises people, good work boosts pride.
