Fairly eye opening post from Llanberis MRT: showing how their callout rates have basically tripled in 6 years. Friends who do MRT in the Dales and Lakes tell the same story. A lot of it does seem to be social media influencers driving people to more risky routes - and not mentioning difficulty.

Riches

It looked like the sort of wedge

that would choke a shire horse to death:

two grand in bundles of fifties,

their waists pinched by red rubber bands.

You asked me to count the lot,

then drove away to meet a man

who knew a man, and came back late

in a lime-green Ford Cortina.

I thought we were made of money
when you let me sit in your lap

and we reverse-parked it, my feet

pressing on your feet in the dark.

Taken from my pamphlet called Collecting The Data. I'd love you to buy a copy from me or via Red Squirrel Press. If you get it from me it will be signed (if you want it to be).

1/2 Fantastic to find a female Common Blue #butterfly in our tiny garden mini-meadow yesterday. She must have been egg-laying, as today I spotted what I take to be several of her eggs on Bird’s-foot Trefoil. Now I have a dilemma... @ukbutterflies.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

A rare #butterfly visitor to our garden this afternoon: White-letter Hairstreak. Stayed for 45 minutes on the one flower head, feeding on nectar even during persistent drizzle. #SaveButterflies #Lancaster
A White-letter Hairstreak (Satyrium w-album). It's a small brown butterfly with ragged black wing tips, a scarlet zig-zag line just inside the black, and two thin white lines crossing the undersides of the wings, resembling a letter 'w'. It's perched on the silvery-blue flower head of Eryngium × olivierianum 'Big Blue'.

Couldn't agree more - flea and tick insecticides for pets containing neonicotinoids should be banned to help save our seriously declining insect faunas, including pollinators but also less obviously useful to us insects, which are the basis of all food webs.

#Orchids looking resplendent today despite wind and rain in Miss Whalley's Field in #Lancaster. This little patch (with some hybridisation between Common Spotted and Southern Marsh perhaps?) is flowering much earlier than usual for here. @ukorchids.bsky.social #wildflowers
Pink spikes of Common Spotted-orchid, perhaps showing signs of hybridisation with Southern Marsh Orchid, growing through bright green grasses with a scattering of yellow Meadow Buttercups. In the background is a block of flats, some urban woodland, a group of Victorian houses and the distant dome of the Ashton Memorial in Lancaster's Williamson Park. The grey sky threatens rain.

Phoebe Hessel: Brighton’s 108-Year-Old Soldier
Today’s article is about Phoebe Hessel who lived a remarkable life, in part as a man. According to her grave, she was born in 1713, so right at the end of the reign of Queen Anne and lived long enough to see George IV become king in 1821. If her  age was correctly noted in the parish burial register, then she died at the incredible  age of 108, in Brighton, Sussex. Phoebe was one of the most prominent Brighton characters in the 18th and early 19th centuries, as this inscription on her tombstone in the parish church yard attests to and was known to almost everyone in the town and surrounding villages.
