Braverman spouting bollocks again, I see. Despite being born/raised in Kent I have no desire to be English if this is how 'patriots' define it. Which is good, because only one of my grandparents was English, so come Reform's ethno-nationalist revolution I'll apparently be considered 'foreign' anyway

This is testament to No.10's frankly astonishing degree of political competence. A policy which was branded electoral suicide 48 hours ago now showing signs of robust popularity.

Imagine a PM who looked at the 'electoral suicide' reforms we clearly need, and just went ahead with them anyway. Imagine being brave enough to be the transformative leader we clearly need, and being happy to trade time in power for legacy. Just do the things, for heaven's sake, do them now!

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

Heres’ a poem for all the pedents.
Pedents

Foot soldiers in the War on Error,
they’re here to save us from ourselves,
with Fowler’s Modern English Usage
(first edition, nineteen twelve).

They scrutinise each word we write
for typos, gaffes, et cetera,
correcting all our dumb mistakes
to make our grammar betterer.

They sigh and tut and tell us off
for the rules we have forsaken
and chart this nation’s steep decline
by the care we should of taken.

Custodians of the King’s English,
they merely serve to keep it pure
and restrict, they hope, the ignorant
to three mistakes or less.

In doing so, they hold no fear
they will deprive a thing of life:
for it’s not important what is said,
what matters is that its right.

slow day in the office so we're starting beef with archaeologists
One of those 'STOP DOING X' memes, ripping into archaeology. It has images of soil stratum, a trowel, and a flint shard. The text mocks archaeologists for digging for pottery sherds and saying everything has a 'ritual purpose'.

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
Axios: AI has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.

Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane — makes it easy to lose the thread. AI can help you pick it back up without starting over.
📖 I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

"I'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

The cover of the new issue (Viz 358 - in the shops now. Hurry, hurry, hurry while stocks last), and a letter that reads as follows: "I see Professor Brian Cox is at it again, boasting about how his Large Hadron Collider at Cern accelerates particles to 9.9999% the speed of light. Well when I turn my torch on, the light comes out the end at 100% the speed of light, and I didn't need several billion quid to do it. In fact it cost a quid from Poundland. So he can stick that in his pipe and smoke it. Gary Ireland, Tauranga."
