It has been brought to my attention that the forest fires around Bordeaux are burning up the pine plantations set up on drained wetlands there in the 19thC, a project widely admired and imitated around the world. In case someone wants to fund my global history of pine project.

It has been criminally underreported but Kelsey Pfendler has just rowed solo across the Pacific Ocean from the US coast to Hawaii in record time. A 2,400-mile unsupported journey in 43 days, 17 hours, and 55 minutes. Notably beating the Men’s record by 9 whole days.

Sort of spurred by this: I still think that part of the whole Post Pandemic Social Settlement should have been a huge (inter)national effort to properly ventilate our spaces and that should have included ACs and heat pumps for places in Europe, and it's just a shame we generally didn't do this.

A brief appreciation thread for some of my colleagues in Classics at Exeter, who the University of Exeter have put at risk of redundancy @exeter.ac.uk. A few are on here, most are not, but I'm going to say nice things about them anyway.

this is what i mean when i say ai is a rhetorical technology. functionally this is a tool for *justifying deportation*, not a tool for assessing age. when someone is pitching an ai product, don't ask them what it's supposed to do. ask yourself what it's supposed to justify

Such a tough choice! A technology no one asked for or a livable future. 'Sorry kids, I know you Southern Europe used to be a nice place before the summer temperatures destroyed crops and made it unlivable, but having to compare my own emails was such a drag.'

Sorry for the threads screenshot i stole, but this is important. I knew a dude who got his master's degree in religious studies in his eighties. People come out start dating or transitioning in their 90s. Life is wild and can be so wonderful, and as long as you're drawing breath, change is possible

Alright y'all, I need a reminder that 37 isn't too late to change careers and go back to school to get a master's because it feels like it is.

We're all late bloomers in my family, I wrote my first book at 40, my mom went back to school and became an orthodontist at 45 and now runs one of the county's best clinics for children with severe cranio-facial irregularities, and my grandmother married her high school crush at the age of 89 and is happier than she's ever been...it's never too late for anything actually:)

And what edits will help you avoid a resubmit? (Not that there’s any shame in that but it can definitely be stressful for some people). Are you submitting a complete draft by a certain date? Have faith in all the skills and knowledge you’ve acquired & can use in determining your plan for submission

Without knowing anything about your relationship with your supervisors, it’s important to remember that you are the boss of your thesis. If you’re worried about getting through the next two months, perhaps talk to your supervisors about your plan for getting it in. What edits are nice-to-haves

I can’t say I’m the model of a sustainable way to finish the thesis, but yes, the best kind of thesis is the one that is finished and the one that is finished is never perfect.

That’s AI-more ♫ When the shape formed by rain will forever remain That’s a Zoongie When you walk with a stride that young benches would ride That’s a Zoongie When your dress fumbles light and your laugh steals delight That’s a Zoongie When it looks to your eye like it’s writ by AI That’s a Zoongie
Lincoln Michel
@TheLincoln

The Granta slop story has, uh, given a new meaning to morning wood.

They called her Zoongie. Maybe it was a name; maybe rain took a shape and decided to keep it. She had the kind of walking that made benches become men.
Hair tumbling wild, a dress that caught and released light, laughter with iron under it. Eyes that skimmed and did not land, as if what she wanted was elsewhere and she had to pass through men to
get there.
