1/3 It’s official 🙌🏽 The Reyes Ruiz Lab is opening in 2026 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the Department of Pathobiological Sciences. My lab will focus on host antibacterial effectors and adaptation of bacteria to host-imposed stress during S. aureus infections.

Type I IFN-mediated NET release promotes Mycobacterium tuberculosis replication and is associated with granuloma caseation
Sur Chowdhury et al. report that Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection results in the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) that promote Mtb replication and associate with tissue damage. Blocking NET release results in better control of Mtb replication, revealing a strategy for treating these deadly infections.

The preliminary sequence from the H5N1 human case in British Columbia has been posted and it is not good news. The virus potentially has a quasispecies at HA residue 226 (H3 numbering). This is bad news because we know that mutations at residue 226 can increase binding to human receptors. 1/
