Columbus Day was first proclaimed in the US in 1892 by President Harrison following the 1891 lynchings of eleven Italian immigrants in New Orleans, the worst outbreak of anti-Italian violence in US history. It was explicitly nativist and anti-Catholic.

Fwiw I do genuinely think that unless you have an actually good health-related reason, not reading books is a personality defect and my advice on how to get men to read is ruthless bullying.

I've seen similar descriptions/attitudes to people reading Cormac McCarthy and my knee jerk response is that men arent reading and writing them 'as much' because these books are not, and never were, big muscular super macho epics and actually spent time disassembling masculinity.

And for those who are not academics: heaving a pile of papers that haven’t gone through peer review and going “here, you sort this out for us and prove us wrong” isn’t scholarship. It’s a hurricane shitting on an earthquake and demanding the professionals come clean it up.

There's a kind of person who gets very upset when they have to struggle to understand something. This guy Saad can't fathom poetry. It's a pity for a man who considers himself An Intellect. He should admit it, and learn something about it if he thinks it's important enough to make an issue.

The campaign of educational censorship sweeping Texas and other GOP-governed states in the name of “free speech” and “diversity of viewpoint” in many ways exceeds the worst of the McCarthy Era (gift link obvs) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
You have to go back to the loyalty oath cases of the Cold War period to see relatively analogous situations where the government was trying to silence academics with viewpoints that they didn’t like,” Emerson Sykes, an attorney with the ACLU, told me. “But even in those cases, we did not see the sort of brazen attempt to ban particular ideas or ideologies and scrub them from the public record or from public education.”
