It was a very bittersweet listen and yes it was at times heartbreaking to hear Vini struggle with something so tied to his identity yet it's without a shadow of a doubt his playing. That chamber ensemble arrangement for 'To Belgian Friends' admittedly made me choke up.

I think the initial appeal for the aforementioned was that these were artists sort of tangentially connected while producing works that didn't sound like one another. Kindred spirits for sure. But I'd propose the viewpoint that the eighties were rife with artists mapping out the genre long before.

Ironically for me, what got me into what could be described as 'post rock' was the byways and hinterlands from post punk, art rock, ambient, industrial, and to an extent metal. All the esoteric jazz and contemporary classical elements came by proxy. But as the OP indicates: there is no wrong entry.

It's surprisingly a breezy three hour run time: but I think the criss-cross editing over a twenty year gulf made it at points kind of annoying if one walked in expecting a linear adaptation. Also weird that it's rated 'R' when the proceedings came across like a hard 'PG-13'.

Caught a 70mm screening of this yesterday with my otherhalf and @sotoalfred.bsky.social more or less articulates my post viewing thoughts. Typical Nolan scope and technical accomplishment (with some impressive sequences), but as my partner gripped: too restrained in it's commitment to realism.
